CLEVELAND - The Cleveland State wrestling team jumped out to an early 18-0 lead and never looked back as they defeated Virginia Tech in an Eastern Wrestling League match on Thursday night, 28-9, at Woodling Gym. With the win, the Vikings move to 8-8 on the year, and 2-3 in the EWL. Virginia Tech slips to 7-8, 1-4 in the league.

"We finally put it all together tonight," head coach Jack Effner said. "It seems like lately we've been finding ways to not finish off a match, and tonight we finally did that. We got some great matches out of everyone tonight, from top to bottom."

Cleveland State took eight of the nine contested bouts, with the Hokies just taking a forfeit win at 133 and a sudden victory win in the match's final bout at 165. The Vikings jumped out to an early 18-0 lead, highlighted by Russ Davie's pin of Kris Wiedegreen in just 1:13. By the time the 133 match came around, it was too late to stem the momentum the Vikings had built.

Of the eight wins by Cleveland State, six were decisions to go along with Davie's pin at 285 and Jason Effner's 11-0 major decision at 157 over Andrew Donofrio.

The Vikings return to action on Sunday when they head to Clarion for another Eastern Wrestling League match. Cleveland State will conclude the dual meet season on Sun., Feb. 22, against West Virginia at Woodling Gym. That match will start at 2 p.m.
