Shaw and Donohoe Finish Third at 2014 EWL Tournament

CLEVELAND, Ohio-  The Cleveland State wrestling team competed and hosted the 2014 EWL Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.  Sophomore Riley Shaw finished third for the second straight year and junior Matt Donohoe took third as well.  Shaw finished third at last year's EWL tournament at Edinboro.  CSU finished fifth with 74.5 points.

Five CSU wrestlers had the opportunity to wrestle for third place in the tournament and finished in the top four.  The Vikings had solid showings from Daniel King (133), Jared McKinley (141), Nick Montgomery (149), Matt Donohoe (165), and Riley Shaw (285). 

King had two decision wins against his opponents.  In the first round of the consolations he defeated fifth seeded Vince Rodriguez of George Mason, 6-3.  His second win on the day was against Clarion's Sam Sherlock in a 6-1 decision.  His win put him in position to wrestle for third place.  In the consolation finals, King ended up finishing fourth overall in the 133 weight class for the tournament.  McKinley also tallied two wins in the tourney coming by decision.  In his first win he beat Rider's Paul Kirchner 6-3 and in his second victory he defeated Clarion's Tyler Bedeleyon 9-3.  McKinley's win over Bedelyon put him in position to wrestle for third in the consolation finals.  In the consolation finals, he faced Sahid Kargbo of George Mason.  Unfortunately, McKinley fell short in the match, but finished a respective fourth place in his weight class.

Montgomery also had a solid day on the mats for Cleveland State.  He had a bye in the first round of the consolations.  He then faced off against Clarion's Justin Arthur, defeating him 6-5 by decision.  In the third and fourth place bout , Montgomery fell to Lock Haven's Macaulay Malderelli and finished fourth in the 149 weight class.  Donohoe had an impressive tournament finishing third in his weight class at 165.  He had three wins on the day, two by decision, and the other by fall.  His first win was by fall (5:44) over Clarion's Michael Pavasko.  His second win was by decision, 11-6, over Edinboro's Kasey Davis.  In the consolation finals Donohoe defeated Jacob Kemerer from Lock Haven (10-6) by decision to seal third place.

Shaw had another excellent EWL tournament earning third his second straight year.  He recorded three wins on the day.  In his first win, he defeated Lock Haven's Brad Emerick by decision 6-1.  Shaw fell in the second round to second seeded Justin Grant of Bloomsburg, but finished strong in the consolation semifinals.  Shaw brushed off the lossand earned two more wins to cap off the tournament.  Both of his wins came by decision over George Mason's Jacob Kettler (4-0) and defeated Clarion's Evan Daley (8-2) to capture a third place finish.  Cleveland State's Nick Corba (174), Xavier Dye (184), and Corbin Boone (197) finished fifth in their select weight classes.
