Vikings Prepare for 2014 EWL Wrestling Tournament

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State wrestling team will be competing in, and hosting the 2014 EWL Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, March 8 at Woodling Gymnasium.  The morning session will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the afternoon session will begin at 5:00 p.m.

The Vikings will try to earn a first place finish in this year's 2014 EWL Wrestling tournament.   CSU is hoping to claim the conference title crown and has not done so dating back to 1979.  The Vikings have had four runner-up finishes in the program's history in 1978, 1983, 1984, and 1987. Sophomore Riley Shaw (285) finished third in last year's EWL Tournament at Edinboro, and qualified for the NCAA  Division I National Championships.  Shaw will look to regain his form from last season's tourney into this year's meet.

The Vikings defeated Gardner -Webb 20-18 last time out, earning their third win of the season on Sunday (Feb 23).  The Vikings also had a close match against Ohio, falling 20-19.  CSU tied 19-19 with OU, but lost by criteria.  CSU had wins from Xavier Dye (184), Daniel King (133), Matt Donohoe (165), and Nick Corba (174) against the Bobcats.  Against Gardner-Webb, CSU had wins from King, Nick Montgomery (149), R.J. LaBeef (157), Dye, and Riley Shaw (285).

Dye's first win of the day was an impressive tech fall (15-0) over Gray Jones of Gardner-Webb and against Ohio, he won by major decision (13-4) over Ryan Garringer.  King also went 2-0 on the mats winning by forfeit against Ohio and defeated Robbie Golde of Gardner-Webb, 8-2 by decision.  His two wins gave him a team leading 22 wins to finish the regular season.  Donohoe pinned (1:19) Ohio's Harrison Hightower.  Corba defeated Ohio's Marshal Willet by decision, 3-2.  Montgomery also won by decision, giving him nine on the year over Tyler Ziegler of Gardner-Webb.  LaBeef earned his seventh decision victory over Cole Graves of Gardner-Webb.  Shaw recorded his fourth pin (4:20) of the season over Gardner-Webb's Justin Kozera.
