Cleveland State Men’s Tennis Opens #HLTennis Play With 5-2 Win Over IUPUI

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team opened the Horizon League portion of its 2023 spring schedule Saturday, picking up a 5-2 victory over IUPUI. With the win, the Vikings improve to 12-6 overall this year, and 1-0 in #HLTennis play.

The Vikings swept the doubles matches on Saturday, picking up matching 6-3 wins at the top two spots from Raul Teichmann/Kade Mindry and Carl Gedlitschka/JuandeDios Abboud, respectively, while Maxime Mareschal-Hay and Mikael Erler earned a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot.

IUPUI evened the match to begin singles play then, as the Jaguars picked up a win at the No. 4 spot, before Mareschal-Hay gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the top of the lineup. The win marked his 17th of the season, and improved him to 12-4 in dual match play.

The Vikings gained a 3-1 advantage with a win at No. 6 singles, with Gedlitschka picking up a 6-2, 6-4 win in his first Horizon League match.

Devin Boyer then notched the clinching point for the Vikings at No. 5 singles, earning a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win to give the Vikings their first Horizon League win of the season. This marked the first #HLTennis match of Boyer's Cleveland State career.

The Vikings also picked up a win at No. 2 singles, with Erler notching a 7-5, 6-4 victory.

Cleveland State will close out the weekend with a pair of matches tomorrow (Sunday, March 26), hosting Northern Kentucky at 12:00 p.m. and West Liberty at 4:00 p.m.
