Cleveland State Men’s Tennis Earns Doubleheader Sweep Over Ball State & Niagara

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team closed out the weekend with a pair of wins Sunday, picking up a 6-1 victory over Ball State and a 7-0 win against Niagara. With the wins, the Vikings now stand at 6-4 overall this season.

"The first match against Ball State was one of our more complete matches of the year, we had to dig deep and work our way through some tough singles matches, after playing some solid doubles to open the contest," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "The after a long day the guys did a good job of keeping focus and competing in the second match against Niagara. I'm happy with our results up and down the lineup today, and I'm looking forward to the continued improvement from this team."

In the first match of the day, Cleveland State picked up the doubles point against the Cardinals, with Raul Teichmann and Kade Mindry earning a 7-6(6) victory at No. 1 doubles and Carl Gedlitschka and JuandeDios Abboud posting a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot.

The Vikings were able to carry their momentum into singles then, picking up wins on five of the six courts.

Mikael Erler returned to the lineup for the first time this spring after sitting out due to injury, picking up a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0(5) win at No. 4 singles. In addition, Maxime Mareschal-Hay and Teichmann both extended their current singles win streak to five straight matches, Mareschal-Hay with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the top of the lineup and Teichmann with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 2 singles.

Also picking up singles wins for the Vikings against Ball State were Mindry at No. 3 singles (7-6, 6-4) and Devin Boyer at the No. 5 spot (6-1, 4-6, 6-1).

The Vikings were once again able to earn the early 1-0 lead in the second match of the day then, picking up wins at the top two spots. Mindry and Teichmann earned a 6-4 victory at the top of the lineup, while Gedlitschka and Abboud posted a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot.

Gedlitschka then gave the Vikings a quick 2-0 advantage at the start of singles, earning a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot. Abboud followed him with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, before Mareschal-Hay clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the top spot.

The Vikings then added wins from Mindry at No. 2 singles (3-6, 6-4, ret.), Cole Chappell at the No. 5 spot (6-1, 7-6(3)) and Andrew Zimcosky at No. 4 singles (6-4, 6-4). Zimcosky's win at the No. 4 spot marked his first singles win of the spring campaign.

Cleveland State will now return to the road next week, beginning a seven-match roadswing against Bryant on Saturday, February 18.
