Cleveland State Concludes Day Three of #HLSD Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - The Cleveland State swimming and diving team wrapped up day three of the #HLSD Championships on Thursday evening inside IUPUI's natatorium. Friday and Saturday will consist of swimming, as the diving portion of the championship concluded on Tuesday.

"Today was a great day for Cleveland State," said head coach Hannah Burandt. "We brought the energy from the very beginning. Both our men and women had an incredible day - from Timmy (Kubacki) breaking a program record, to our women finishing third in the 200 free relay - today was just an awesome day. I'm so proud of our student-athletes."

For the men, Timothy Kubacki finished third in the 500-yard freestyle with an impressive time of 4:24.35. His 4:25.35 is a new program record, breaking Bjorn Schantz's record of 4:24.65 set in 2006. 

Right behind Kubacki in the 500 was fellow Viking Dominik Niedzialek, finishing in fourth place with an overall time of 4:27.15. Jake Taulbee rounded out the 500 A Final for the Green and White, posting a time of 4:31.88.

Niedzialek jumped up two spots from last season, as the senior finished fifth in last year's #HLSD Championships.

In the 200-yard IM, Jack Krusinksi took home fourth place timing 1:49.88, while Bob Hick finished with an overall time of 1:50.33, snagging the seventh spot.

The Vikes took the second spot in the 400-yard medley relay behind strong perfromances from Niedzialek, Griffin Manning, Colin Martin and Kenny Thomas.

On the women's side, Rachel Contich (4:55.58) and Lexi Kostelnik (4:56.58) took third and fourth place, respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle, Emily Deitz snagged the fourth spot in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.61.

Kostelnik had a one spot improvement, as she finished fifth during last year's league championships.

Caroline Hughes notched a lifetime best during the consolation round in the 200 IM with a score of 2:04.76.

The Vikings finished third in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as Emily Deitz, Ana Sousa, Rachel Contich and Irena Wedawiak swam for the Green and White.

"Again, we brough the energy," said Burandt. "We bounce back. It's who we are. It's what we do. Was today perfect? No. Will we bounce back and learn from our mistakes? Absolutely. It's just who we are. I'm so excited for tomorrow."

The 2021 #HLSD Championships continue competition on Friday, April 9. Preliminaries will start at 9:15 a.m. ET and final competition will begin at 4:30 p.m. ET with both sections will be streamed on ESPN3. Visit our #HLSD Championship Central for more.
