NORTHVILLE, Mich. – The Cleveland State cross country team continued the 2013 season Saturday, placing fourth at the Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational. The Vikings were paced by two top-30 finishers – Ashlyn Woods and Erin Pavick – while Katie Webb, Alanna Shamrock and Sarah Mallow recorded top-40 finishes.
"Overall I thought we had a good race today, we definitely improved our standing from last year's race at this course and we are doing that with a depleted roster, which is a good sign for the season," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "We have to work on holding our pace after the two-mile mark, because we let some runners pass us today and if we don't let that happen we will really be able to improve our finishes. We ran better than last week, and I am very pleased with the improvements that everyone is making week-to-week. Hopefully we will be able to have a full roster again soon, and really show what we are capable of doing."
All six of Cleveland State's freshmen who ran Saturday improved on their times from last weekend, including Woods who paced the Vikings with a 23rd place finish – crossing the line in 20:01. Pavick was the second Viking to cross the finish line, placing 30th in a time of 20:33.
Junior Katie Webb competed for the first time this season Saturday, placing 35th overall and third on the team with a time of 21:01. Finishing right behind Webb were Alanna Shamrock (21:03) and Sarah Mallow (21:08), who placed 36th and 37th, respectively.
Ashley Lydic (21:45) and Jesse Stallings (22:22) also improved on their times from last weekend's race, while Brittany Carson competed in her first collegiate race, crossing the finish line in a time of 22:38.
Shannon Kruger (22:42), Megan O'Keefe (23:33) and Amanda Kalain (23:40) also competed for the Vikings Saturday.
Cleveland State will be in action next on Saturday, September 14, participating in the Ohio Invitational in Athens, Ohio.
