SETTING THE SCENE
The  Cleveland State women's soccer team pulled above .500 with last week's 3-2 home win over Youngstown State. Christina Trickett netted an early tally on a deflected shot before Elena Gutlove found the go-ahead marker in the 37th minute. Kathryn Ramicone sealed the victory with her first career goal in the 54th minute for a 3-2 Vikings win. Overall, the Vikes outshot the Penguins 25-12, including 15-4 in the first half. Cleveland State sits at 3-2-0 on the year, good for third place in the #HLWSOC standings.

A WIN ON WEDNESDAY WOULD...
...give the Vikings a perfect 3-0-0 start at home for the first time since a five-game winning streak at Krenzler Field to open the 2013 campaign. It would also mark the first victory over Milwaukee in program history. The Vikes nearly topped the Panthers in 2014 but wound up with a 1-1 tie on the road.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Milwaukee (3-1-0) suffered its first Horizon League loss in five years last week with a 1-0 setback at IUPUI, snapping the longest unbeaten run in #HLWSOC history at 36 games. The Panthers have long dominated league play, winning 19 of the last 20 regular season titles. Mackenzie Schill leads Milwaukee with three goals and seven points while Natalie Auble has contributed a pair of tallies to go with one assist. Goalkeeper Elaina LaMacchia owns a 3-1-0 record, making 11 saves on 12 shots on net for a .917 save percentage.

MOVING UP THE RANKINGS
Maddie Young is tied for the Horizon League lead in scoring with nine points on the year while Elena Gutlove ranks third with eight points thanks to three goals and a pair of assists. With recent hot streaks by Kathryn Ramicone and Christina Trickett, the Vikings now have four of the top 10 scorers in #HLWSOC. Ramicone ranks eighth with a goal and three assists for five total points and Trickett sits in ninth with two tallies over her last two matches.

SHOOT IT!
Young, Trickett and Gutlove are three of only seven Horizon League players averaging at least four shots per game. Trickett has brought an aggressive approach since entering the lineup on Feb. 25, firing 12 shots in only three matches. Young rattled off nine shots against Purdue Fort Wayne on Feb. 25, the second-highest single game shot total by a Viking in team history. Gutlove also accomplished the feat on Feb. 10 against Wright State. The Vikings own four of the five highest indidivual single-game shot toals in the Horizon League in 2021.

RISING IN THE HORIZON
Cleveland State is first in the Horizon League in shots (87) and shots on goal (45). The Vikes also lead the conference in corners (33), rank second in goals (10) and sit third in assists (11). As a team, Cleveland State is outshooting the opposition  35-20 after the opening half, including 5-1 in overtime periods. Overall, the Vikings average 17.5 shots per match compared to only 9.5 by opponents.

PERSONAL MILESTONE
In her first start of the campaign, outside back Rylee Bussen recorded her first career assist on Christina Trickett's 24th-minute goal. Bussen recorded one goal as a freshman in 2019, finding the lone marker in a 1-0 non-conference win over Miami (Ohio). The Delaware, Ohio product became the seventh Viking to register a point this season.

MAKING AN IMPACT
Multiple freshmen have emerged as key contributors in the earlygoings with Kathryn Ramicone and Bella Ceepo being tabbed as starters over the Vikings' opening five matches and Maia Ransom making an appearance in every game while logging her first start on Feb. 10. Additionally, Maria Bashardoust started the first four matches at outside back. Ramicone is tied for fourth in the #HLWSOC with three assists while Bashardoust picked up her first point with the helper on Elena Gutlove's game-winning goal against Wright State on Feb. 10.
