CLEVELAND, Ohio - Sophomore Chris Weber placed sixth in the heavyweight bracket, highlighting the Viking wrestling team's performance at the Cleveland State Open on Saturday (Dec. 11).

The event, hosted at CSU's Woodling Gym, drew over 250 participants from 27 schools.

"I thought the tournament was very successful," head coach Ben Stehura said. "We had great participation and witnessed some very good wrestling. I am proud of Chris placing, and I thought the entire team performed well against some quality competition."

Weber dropped a 3-2 decision to Purdue's Adam Wall in his first match of the day, but rebounded well. He pinned West Virginia's Jon Casper in 1:13 in his first consolation match and then advanced to the consolation quarterfinals after his next opponent forfeited.

A 4-1 decision against Mike Murray of Central Michigan earned Weber a rematch with Wall in the consolation semifinals. Another close match ensued, but Wall pulled out the 3-1 victory. Weber then faced Michigan State's Steve Andrus in his final match of the day, falling in a 14-5 major decision.

The Vikings' next competition will come at the end of the month when CSU will close out the calendar year by participating at the Midlands Invitational in Evanston, Ill. On Dec. 29-30.
