Vikings Bow Out of NCAA Tournament

March 19, 2004

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Senior Russ Davie and freshman Matt Kallai had their runs in the NCAA Wrestling Championships ended on Friday afternoon, both falling short of earning All-American honors. The Vikings close out the championships with a 5-12 mark in a tie for 46th place with 5.5 points.

Davie advanced the farthest, winning a pair of matches in the consolation bracket before losing. The senior from Perrysburg, Ohio, defeated Derrell Lothridge of Old Dominion, 5-3, in the second round of the consolation bracket before seeing his collegiate career end at the hands of Bill Stouffer of Central Michigan, 8-5.

Kallai, who opened the tournament with a win, would lose his next two matches, falling in the consolation second round to Andrew Roy of Rutgers, 6-1.

The Vikings end the season with a 9-9 dual meet record, and will return four NCAA qualifiers in DeAngelo Penn, Ron Howard, Joe Phillips and Kallai next fall. Davie and fellow senior Anthony Coleman finish their Cleveland State careers, with Davie having advanced to the NCAA Championships three times and Coleman qualifying twice.
