Edinboro, Pa. - Senior Ron Howard and freshman Rashard Goff continued their winning ways in the Eastern Wrestling League on Saturday at the EWL Championships, as both wrestlers picked up a pair of wins to advance to their respective championship bouts on Sunday (March 5).

Howard, 6-0 in the EWL regular season and 25-7 overall, scored a pair of major decisions at 184 pounds on the first day of the tournament, sending back Dominic Ross of Clarion in a 11-3 victory before topping Kyle Deliere of Pittsburgh by a score of 13-2. Howard will square off against Alex Clemson of Edinboro tomorrow in the title bout, who Howard beat 10-7 on Feb. 9.

Goff, who went 5-1 in the conference regular season in addition to his 21-15 overall mark at heavyweight, tallied two decisions on the day, beating Matt Holsopple of West Virginia, 8-3, and shutting out Edinboro's Jeremy Mosley in a 4-0 bout. Goff faces Bloomsburg's Mike Spaid for the title on Sunday, who handed the Viking his only conference defeat in a 3-0 bout on Feb. 5.

With the wins, both wrestlers have assured themselves bids for the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City on March 16-18. Howard will be heading to the tournament for the third time in his career, while Goff earns his first trip.

The top three finishers at each weight class in the EWL Championships earn automatic bids to the national tournament, with five wild card selections being awarded following the meet as well.

Also still alive in the tournament for the Vikings are freshman Victer Crenshaw (157) and sophomores Joe Wornoff (125), Mike Hurley (141), Ryan Hurley (149) and Tim Scarl (165). The quintet will be in action Sunday morning in the consolation bracket.

Wornoff picked up his second major decision over West Virginia's Scott Stuart in less than two weeks, topping the Mountaineer by a 13-4 score. Wornoff also beat Stuart with a 20-7 major on Feb. 19 at Woodling Gym after not wrestling for nearly a month.

After falling in the first round, Mike Hurley got back on the winning side in the consolation bracket with a pin of Brian Ellis of Lock Haven in 2:41. Scarl also redeemed a first-round defeat, upending Chris Goings of Clarion in a 12-3 major decision.

As a team, the Vikings currently sit in sixth place with 56 points. West Virginia leads the race with 89.5 points.

Heavyweight Russ Davie was the last Viking to win an Eastern Wrestling League Championship, doing so in 2004.

Second-day action begins on Sunday (March 5) with consolation matches at 10:00 a.m. and the championship bouts at 4:00 p.m.
