Vikings Top Eastern Michigan, Fall To Slippery Rock

Jan. 14, 2006

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland State Duals ended with mixed results for the Viking wrestling team on Saturday (Jan. 14), as CSU scored a strong win over Eastern Michigan in their first bout before falling in a costly match with Slippery Rock.

The Vikings (3-3) dominated the Eagles in a 29-12 win, while an injury to 197-pounder Joe Dennis provided the low point of a 22-13 loss to Slippery Rock.

"It is kind of a disappointing day," head coach Jack Effner said. "We preformed pretty well, and, for the most part, we are getting better. But there is such a small margin of error in college wrestling that you have to come out with the same intensity for every bout."

Eastern Michigan took an early lead with a decision at the 125 bout, but the Vikings would follow with five straight wins and seven in the final nine to claim the victory.

Sophomore David Armstrong answered first for the Vikings in the 133 pound bout, scoring four takedowns and three near falls to upend Phillip Plowman in a 16-2 major decision and give the Vikings their first lead at 4-3.

Sophomore Mike Hurley scored a takedown four seconds into the 141 bout against Ahmed Joumaa and rode him for the remainder of the first period. He then scored a near fall in the second period and a reversal in the third to secure a 7-2 victory with 4:42 of riding time.

Sophomore Ryan Hurley and Jermain Thompson put up a defensive showing for the first three periods, trading escapes for a 1-1 tie. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Hurley rode Thompson for the first tiebreak period and then escaped with seven seconds left in the final period to earn a 2-1 decision.

After Chad Roush scored a takedown early in the 157 bout, freshman Victer Crenshaw reversed with 1:10 left before pinning the EMU wrestler at the 2:15 mark.

In his first bout with the Vikings, sophomore Tim Scarl built up a 9-3 lead over Quinn Guernsey at 165, recording four takedowns before notching a fifth takedown in the third period and building up 1:35 in riding time for a 12-4 major decision.

Senior Ron Howard sealed the CSU victory at 184, working a 4-1 decision with almost four minutes of riding time over John McClure.

Freshman Rashard Goff put an exclamation point on the match at heavyweight, rolling over and pinning Jake Wood 54 seconds into the bout.

In the Vikings' second match of the day against Slippery Rock, Hunt got the Vikings in front early with a 15-4 major decision over Chris Clarke on five takedowns and a three-point near fall.

Slippery Rock would respond with wins in the next two bouts to take a 6-4 lead, but the Vikings would answer right back with decisions in the subsequent two. Ryan Hurley controlled the 149-pound bout against Chuck Wiltrout, scoring four takedowns for an 8-3 victory. Crenshaw followed with a 6-0 decision over Gerald Christian at 157 to put CSU on top at 10-6.

The Viking charge would end there, however, as SRU would claim wins in four of the final five bouts. Scarl battled Jason Cardillo to a 4-4 deadlock after three periods of the 165 bout before Cardillo claimed the decision with a sudden-victory takedown and closed the CSU lead to 10-9 before Slippery Rock reclaimed the advantage at 16-10 thanks to a 10-1 major decision by Jerimiah Frederick at 174 and a 4-2 decision by Charlie Pienaar at 184.

The afternoon ended poorly for the Vikings despite a strong 3-0 win for Goff at heavyweight, as Dennis was forced to injury default after injuring his left knee against Andrew Joseph after jumping out to a 7-1 lead through the first period.

"The one thing I wanted out coming out of this meet was health, and we almost got out of here with it," coach Effner added. "It's still early though."

The injury to Dennis is yet another costly blow to the Vikings, who have already lost 165-pounder Marcus Effner for the season to a knee injury.

In the first match of the afternoon, Eastern Michigan held off a charging Slippery Rock team to come away with a 19-15 victory.

Cleveland State returns to action on Jan. 22 when they head to the Ashland Open to battle Ohio, Davidson and Northern Illinois beginning at 10:00 a.m.
