Robinson and Smith Advance to MAC Championship Finals for Cleveland State Wrestling

ATHENS, Ohio – Cleveland State will have two wrestlers in the finals of the 2022 MAC Championships tomorrow as Marcus Robinson (149) and Ben Smith (197) advanced to the championship round in their respective weight classes. This is the second straight year that these two will represent the Vikings in the final matches.

The Vikings are in seventh place after day one with 55.5 points. Lock Haven sits atop the standings with 94 points, Central Michigan is second with 73.5 points, and Northern Illinois is third with 67.5 points.

No. 1 Robinson advanced to the MAC Championship match for a second straight season and will face No. 7 Kody Komara of Kent State, in the finals at 149-pounds. In their regular-season match on January 25, Robinson won, 3-2. After receiving a bye in round one, Robinson picked up a 5-4 decision over Caleb Tyus of SIUE in the quarterfinals. He then defeated No. 5 Corbyn Munson of Central Michigan in the semifinals, 6-4.

No. 3 Smith moved into the MAC Championship match for a second consecutive year and will face No. 1 Will Feldkamp of Clarion, in the finals at 197-pounds. These two did not wrestle during the regular season. Following a bye in round one, Smith upended No. 6 Parker McClellan of Lock Haven in the quarterfinals, 7-2. Smith then defeated No. 7 Tyler Bates of Kent State in the semifinals, 6-3.

In the championship semifinals, No. 3 Riley Smucker fell to No. 2 Ashton Eyler of Lock Haven, 3-1 at 165-pounds, and No. 3 DeAndre Nassar suffered a tough 3-1 overtime loss to No. 2 Colin McCracken of Kent State at 184-pounds.

No. 7 Jake Manley (133), No. 3 Riley Smucker (165), Anthony Rice (174), and No. 3 DeAndre Nassar (184) will compete tomorrow in the consolation brackets of their weight classes.

The MAC Championships continue tomorrow with the consolation quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m., leading up to the championship matches at 3:00 p.m.
