Smucker Claims Championship, Cleveland State Wrestling Has Seven Placers at CSU Open

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Vikings had seven place winners and one champion on Saturday at the 16th Annual Cleveland State Open inside Woodling Gymnasium. This is the second straight Open and third time in program history that the Green and White finished with that total.

Riley Smucker captured the lone title of the day at 165 pounds. Daniel Patten (second), Ben Smith (third), Logan Heil (fourth), Marcus Robinson (fifth), DeAndre Nassar (sixth), and John Kelbly (sixth) rounded out the placers.

Riley Smucker was the lone Viking to win a championship, claiming the 165-pound title. Smucker began the day with an 11-5 decision over Patrick Daum of West Virginia and followed that up with a 12-5 win over Eli Brinsky of Clarion. Smucker then pinned Chandler Amaker of Central Michigan in 1:05 during the quarterfinals. He advanced to the title match after pinning Jake Null of NC State in 1:21. In the championship match, Smucker upended Tracy Hubbard of Central Michigan, 6-4.

Daniel Patten finished as the runner-up in the 157-pound weight class. He started off with a 7-1 decision over Conan Becker of Kent State and followed that up with a 5-4 victory over Derek Field of NC State. In the quarterfinals, he upended Trenton Wachter of Central Michigan, 4-2. Patten then advanced to the championship match with a medical forfeit. In the championship match, Patten suffered a tough 3-2 loss to Derek Gilcher of Indiana.

On the day, the Green and White had 18 decisions, 11 falls,  two technical falls, and two major decisions.

Cleveland State returns to action on Monday, December 20th with a pair of matches in Morgantown, West Virginia against Chattanooga at 10:30 a.m. and West Virginia at 1:30 p.m.
