Cleveland State Set to Close Regular Season on Road

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling team will hit the road, but remain in the state, as it competes against a second straight Mid-American Conference opponent this weekend.

CSU will head to Ohio this Sunday, Feb. 14, with matches set to get underway at 3:00 p.m. Video coverage of the event, the final one scheduled in the regular season for both teams, will be available on ESPN+.

This will be the third MAC opponent of the season for CSU, as the Vikings faced Kent State in a round-robin event to open the campaign before meeting Central Michigan in a dual (along with 'extra matches') last weekend.

Cleveland State split 10 dual bouts with Central Michigan last weekend in its home finale, but the Chippewas used bonus points to claim a 21-15 victory. After that performance, Central Michigan vaulted into the national dual meet rankings.

Of CSU's last three opponents, two are currently nationally ranked while the third is among the top five teams in the others receiving votes category.

Junior Ben Smith had one of CSU's most impressive performance against CMU, posting a come-from-behind, 6-4, win over a returning NCAA qualifier and top-25 opponent at 197 pounds. Redshirt freshman Anthony Rice won both his dual bout and an extra match against CMU, picking up back points in both bouts, while also tallying his first-ever collegiate dual victory.

Sophomore DeAndre Nassar owns a team-best 5-1 record thus far this season, with all of his matches coming at 184 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Marcus Robinson, who has primarily competed at 149 pounds this season, has four wins and is 2-1 in dual action.

Ohio will be competing for the second straight weekend after taking the final weekend of January off. The Bobcats fell to Kent State, 22-10, in their home opener last weekend, dropping to 1-7 on the season and 0-4 in MAC action. Three of Ohio's losses have come to ranked foes, including two in the top five nationally, while two more have come to teams that are receiving votes. In addition to Kent State, both CSU and Ohio have faced West Virginia this season, with the Bobcats dropping a 36-3 dual.

Redshirt freshman Jordan Slivka leads Ohio with four wins at 157 pounds.

Cleveland State is 4-11-1 all-time against Ohio. The teams met last year after a three-season hiatus, but this will be the first time CSU travels to Ohio for a dual since the 2013-14 campaign. Ohio claimed a 19-13 win last season in a dual in which neither team registered a pin. Redshirt senior Justin Patrick, redshirt sophomore Riley Smucker and sophomore Logan Heil are the active Vikings to have won bouts in last year's dual with the Bobcats.

The competition against Ohio is slated to be the final one of the regular season for Cleveland State. The Vikings are set to continue their campaign at the MAC Championships, which are being hosted by Rider. The two day event begins Friday, Feb. 26.
