CSU to Face Huskies, Spartans to Close Regular Season

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling team will close the regular season this weekend with a pair of duals.

CSU will visit Bloomsburg Friday, Feb. 14, for its road finale and Mid-American Conference finale. The Vikings will then return home for their regular-season finale Sunday, Feb. 16, as they welcome Michigan State to Woodling Gymnasium. Prior to Sunday's dual, the Vikings will honor their senior class with a recognition ceremony.

The Vikings dropped their lone dual this past weekend, coming up short at home to Northern Illinois.

Redshirt senior Justin Patrick continued his fine, and thrilling, form of late in the dual against the Huskies at 133 pounds. For the third straight bout, Patrick scored the winning points in the final seconds of the match as he tallied a takedown with two seconds left against NIU to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 victory. He has won seven of his last eight to improve to 17-9 on the season.

Redshirt senior Evan Cheek also claimed a victory against NIU at 141 pounds, his team-leading 31st of the season. He improved to 8-1 in the MAC and also tops the team with 17 bonus-point wins this season.

Along with Patrick and Cheek, sophomore Ben Smith was listed in the most recent MAC rankings that were produced last week. Smith owns a 22-11 mark at 197 pounds and has 13 bonus-point wins on the campaign.

Bloomsburg is 3-7 on the season, and 0-5 in the MAC, with wins over LIU, Hofstra and VMI. The Huskies are led by redshirt senior Trevor Allard at 184 pounds. Allard, who owns an 18-2 mark on the season, is the top-ranked wrestler in the MAC at his weight class and among the top 20 nationally. Redshirt freshman Josh Mason has 14 wins at 133 pounds and a team-leading nine pins, including a pair of pins in Bloomsburg's two duals last weekend.

Bloomsburg holds a 25-13-3 advantage in the all-time series with Cleveland State that dates back to the late 1970s. However, the Vikings have won four of their past five, including a 27-15 victory in last season's meeting. Eight active Vikings have dual wins over Bloomsburg in their careers, with Cheek, redshirt junior Ryan Ford and senior Collin Kelly leading the way with two apiece.

Michigan State is 7-9 overall on the season although eight of their nine losses have come to nationally ranked foes. The Spartans also own a pair of ranked wins, including a 19-17 upset of No. 4 Wisconsin this past Sunday. Redshirt sophomore Cameron Caffey and redshirt junior Jake Tucker are the highest-regarded Spartans as they sit among the top 15 nationally, with Caffey inside the top 10 in multiple listings.

Michigan State has won all four prior meetings with Cleveland State, including a 36-7 win in Michigan last season. Smith is the only active Vikings to own a dual win over MSU, which he claimed with a 7-2 victory last season.

Cleveland State will resume action in three weeks' time as it heads to the Mid-American Conference Championships March 7-8.
