DAY RECAP 

The Cleveland State University wrestling team posted a pair of victories and came up short against one foe as the Vikings competed in a quad dual Friday inside VMI's Cormack Hall.                                                                                                                    

CSU dropped its opening dual of the day to Clarion, 25-15. The Vikings responded nicely by claiming wins over California Baptist (29-10) and the host Keydets (30-6). 

Redshirt senior Evan Cheek and redshirt freshman Riley Smucker both went 3-0 on the day as the Viking combined for 19 bout wins overall. 

Cheek was dominating en route to his three wins at 141 pounds. He posted wins by fall against both the Golden Eagles and Lancers and finished the day with a technical fall victory against the Keydets.

Smucker posted his undefeated mark the hard way in his first bout at 165 pounds. He trailed, 2-1, entering the final period but went on to a claim a 6-5 win. He then cruised to a technical fall victory against the Lancers before winning via shutout in his final bout.

Six other Vikings claimed two wins on the day. 

Sophomore Ben Smith (197) won via pin against the Lancers and claimed a victory courtesy of a major decision against the Keydets. True freshman Logan Heil (125) joined Smith in netting a pin, with his coming against VMI. Heil also added an 8-2 win against his Cal Baptist foe.

Redshirt sophomore Chase Archangelo (174), true freshman DeAndre Nassar (184), redshirt junior Nico O'Dor (157) and redshirt senior Justin Patrick (133) all posted two wins on the day. Additionally, the only loss each of the four suffered came via two points or fewer, with O'Dor's coming in overtime. Archangelo's lone loss was a 6-4 setback to a Southern Scuffle placer from earlier this season.

Senior Collin Kelly won his lone bout of the day at heavyweight, claiming a 2-1 win over VMI's Chris Beck.

Cleveland State will open a stretch of seven consecutive MAC duals by hosting Ohio next Saturday, Jan. 18.
