Cheek Wins 141-Pound Title at Cleveland State Open

CLEVELAND -- Senior Evan Cheek captured the title at 141 pounds and Cleveland State had a school-record seven place winners on Saturday at the 15th Annual Cleveland State Open.

In addition to Cheek, Logan Heil (125) and Nico O'Dor (157) finished second, DeAndre Nassar (184) finished third, Cody Moosman (125) placed fourth, Riley Smucker (165) was fifth and John Kelbly (285) finished sixth.

The Vikings' seven place winners topped last year's total of six place winners for the most by Cleveland State in the event.

Cheek turned in a dominant performance in becoming the first Viking to claim an individual title at the Cleveland State Open since the 2011 event. Cheek opened the tournament with a 5-2 decision over Cory Simpson of Kent State and then advanced to the quarterfinals with a fall over Kelan McKenna of Notre Dame at the 4:26 mark of the second period.

In the quarterfinals, Cheek posted a 15-0 technical fall victory over Matthew Zuckerman of Tiffin to remain unbeaten in the tournament. Cheek posted a 10-3 decision victory over Jordan Decatur of Ohio State to advance to the championship match.

In the final, Cheek pinned Jeffrey Boyd of West Virginia at 1:32 of the first period to capture the title.

Heil earned a second-place finish at 125 pounds for Cleveland State. After an opening-round bye, Heil won by fall over Trevor Giallombardo of Ohio at the 4:56 mark in the second round. He posted a dramatic 11-9 sudden victory over William Girard of Bloomsburg and earned a berth in the final with a 7-4 decision win over Jake Ferri of Kent State.

In the final, Chris Cannon of Northwestern posted an 8-2 win over Heil to claim the title.

O'Dor also earned a second-place finish for the Vikings at 157 pounds. He opened the tournament with a 9-4 decision over Jordan Tague of Notre Dame and followed with a tightly contested 3-1 decision over Matthew Dowler of Edinboro. Following a medical forfeit win the quarterfinals, O'Dor earned a spot in the championship match with a 3-2 decision over Benny Baker of Finger Lakes.

Elijiah Clearly of Ohio State recorded a 5-2 decision over O'Dor in the championship match.

Nassar posted two consecutive decision wins to open the tournament before suffering a 4-2 decision loss to Austen Malczewski of Michigan State in the semifinals. Nassar bounced back to defeat Anthony Carman 3-2 in the third-place match.

Cleveland State returns to action on Friday (Dec. 20) when it hosts George Mason in a MAC dual beginning at 7 p.m. in Woodling Gym.
