Cheek Places, Smith Wins Four Matches at Navy Classic

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Redshirt senior Evan Cheek placed at 141 pounds as the Cleveland State University wrestling team competed in a strong 18-field team at the Navy Classic Saturday inside Wesley Brown Field House.

Cheek suffered a lone setback on the day but, due to the tournament format, could only wrestle back to fifth place. Sophomore Ben Smith joined Cheek in tying for the lead in wins among Vikings in the event as he also claimed four victories, with his coming at 197 pounds.

The Vikings competed shorthanded in the event as five possible starters—redshirt senior Justin Patrick at 133, redshirt senior Grant Turnmire at 149, redshirt junior Nico O'Dor at 157, redshirt junior Ryan Ford at 165 and sophomore Dimitri Williams at 184—were unable to compete due to injury.

In his first bout of the day, Cheek had the lead entering the third period but ended up dropping the match after it required multiple overtime periods. He bounced back nicely by winning each of his next four bouts.

Cheek began by topping an opponent from Ohio via injury default although he also held a 7-3 lead in the second period. Cheek then dominated another MAC foe, posting a 19-1 technical fall over an Old Dominion foe, before accepting a forfeit in the consolation quarterfinals. In the consolation semifinals, Cheek got out to a 6-2 lead after the opening period and held on for an 8-3 win over his opponent from the host school. He did not get an opportunity to wrestle the fifth-place match as his opponent had reached the NCAA daily limit.

After losing to a seeded opponent in his opening bout of the day, Smith nearly came back to place in the event. He posted back-to-back major decision wins in his first two consolation bouts, topping foes from The Citadel, 13-3, and Navy, 12-2. Smith then had his best effort of the day as he took down a seeded opponent from Old Dominion in sudden victory, 9-7, despite trailing entering the final period. Smith then notched a first-period pin against a Big Ten opponent before his run finally came to an end with a three-point loss to the eventual fifth-place finisher.

Redshirt sophomore Chase Archangelo reached the quarterfinals at 174 pounds with a pair of wins. He claimed a major decision victory over his opponent from The Citadel in his opening bout before tallying a 5-1 win over his Big Ten foe in the next bout.

Redshirt sophomore John Kelbly won a pair of matches at heavyweight. His first match required more than seven minutes to decide as his escape in the second tiebreaker period gave him a 2-1 victory over his opponent from The Citadel. After dropping his next bout to the top seed in the tournament, Kelbly claimed a 5-3 victory over his opponent from the host school. His day then came to an end with a loss via decision.

True freshman Logan Heil won a pair of bouts at 125 pounds in his first-ever competition in a CSU singlet. Both of his wins came against foes from Mid-American Conference schools, including a 7-5 win over Dalton Rohrbaugh of Lock Haven.

Redshirt freshman Caleb Cass and redshirt sophomore Cody Moosman both tallied a major decision win Saturday. Cass' came at 157 pounds, and Moosman's came at 125 pounds, both against opponents from American.

Redshirt sophomore Brady Barnett won his first bout at 157 pounds and had the lead in the second period in his second bout but could not hold on. He then was forced to take a medical forfeit in his opening consolation bout.

Senior Collin Kelly (285) and redshirt freshman Riley Smucker (165) also each registered a win Friday.

CSU finished in 16th place in the team scoring with 28.5 points.

Cleveland State will next be in action with its first-ever Mid-American Conference dual as it travel to Buffalo Friday, Dec. 6.
