Four Vikings Win Titles at Ohio Intercollegiate Open

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Four members of the Cleveland State University wrestling team won titles as the Vikings competed in the Ohio Intercollegiate Open Sunday inside Veale Field House.

Redshirt sophomore Brady Barnett, redshirt senior Evan Cheek, redshirt senior Justin Patrick and sophomore Ben Smith were the winners at 157, 141, 133 and 197 pounds, respectively.

Redshirt sophomore Chase Archangelo (174), redshirt freshman Riley Smucker (165) and redshirt sophomore Cody Moosman (125) also placed for CSU Sunday.

Barnett was rarely challenged en route to a title as he became the first Viking to reach double-digit wins on the young season. He netted pins in each of his first two matches Sunday, the first of which came against an Ohio State opponent, to reach the semifinals. He then claimed a 14-7 win over a fellow MAC opponent to reach the championship, which he won with a comfortable 8-1 victory.

Cheek made it two for two in tournament titles on the young season after his win at the Clarion Open last weekend. He began his day with a 19-3 technical fall of his opponent from Indiana. After pinning his next opponent, Cheek was matched up with back-to-back opponents competing unattached from Big Ten schools. He won his semifinal bout by a 5-1 margin before having a match go down to the wire for the first time this season. Cheek and his opponent were deadlocked, 5-5, after seven minutes, but he was able to get the winning points in sudden victory to move to 8-0 on the young season.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Patrick started his tournament with an emphatic 18-4 victory to advance to the semifinals. He then used a 7-5 win over a fellow MAC foe to reach the championship bout where he held off his Big Ten foe with a 3-2 victory.

Smith won big in his first bout of the day before winning two tighter matches to win the title. After a 20-5 technical fall win in his first bout, Smith claimed a 5-3 win over his Big Ten opponent in his next match. Smith then led for nearly the entire championship bout as he earned a 5-2 win over a MAC opponent competing unattached.

Smucker placed third for the second straight event after he posted four victories on the day. He used wins by scores of 4-2, 7-0 and 6-2 to advance to the semifinals before dropping a match via decision to an opponent from Ohio State. He got some measure of revenge against the Buckeyes by dominating a different Ohio State opponent with a shutout technical fall win in the third-place bout.

Moosman placed at an event for the first time this season by virtue of back-to-back wins over opponents from Ohio and Ohio State, the first of which was of the major decision variety.

Redshirt sophomore John Kelbly (285) picked up a pair of wins at heavyweight while Archangelo and redshirt junior Cameron Lathem (125) each tallied a win against a conference opponent.

Redshirt freshman Caleb Cass (157) and senior Collin Kelly (285) each garnered one victory Sunday.

No team scores were kept at the event.

Cleveland State will continue action on the weekend before Thanksgiving as it competes at the Navy Classic Nov. 23.
