Cleveland State to Host Pair of Matches Saturday

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling team has a busy Saturday on tap as the Vikings will play host to back-to-back duals.

CSU will host Northern Illinois this Saturday, Feb. 16, at 2:00 p.m. The Vikings will then welcome nationally ranked Lock Haven after the dual against the Huskies. CSU will face Lock Haven at approximately 3:30 p.m. in a dual that was rescheduled due to weather. Live results and live video will be available through TrackWrestling.

The Vikings are coming off two setbacks last weekend, falling to Clarion at home and to Michigan State on the road. Five Vikings posted wins on the weekend.

Redshirt senior Armando Torres notched a major decision victory at Michigan State at 133 pounds and continues to lead the team in wins (27) and bonus-point wins (14). True freshman Ben Smith also picked up a win over MSU at 197 pounds, his 15th in a Viking singlet this season.

Redshirt freshman Brady Barnett moved to 3-1 in Eastern Wrestling League matches with a win over Clarion in CSU's last action in Woodling. Barnett sits at 17-8 on the year and is tied for the team lead in dual wins (9) and tops the team outright in pins (8).

Cleveland State picked up its first-ever win against Northern Illinois last season, a 28-12 triumph, to improve to 1-6 against the Huskies. That win came on neutral ground at Indiana. Among Vikings not redshirting this season, Cameron Lathem, Ryan Ford and John Vaughn have all picked up dual victories in their careers against the Huskies.

Northern Illinois is 6-9 entering the weekend and will wrestle at Kent State Friday night before coming to Cleveland. The Golden Flashes will become the fourth common opponent between the two teams, joining Bloomsburg, Clarion and Michigan State. Redshirt freshman Brit Wilson leads the team with 18 wins at 174 pounds, including a 10-2 mark in duals, while redshirt sophomore Kenny Moore is 16-7 at 165.

Lock Haven is 8-3 overall and looking to finish an undefeated EWL season this weekend. The Bald Eagles are nationally ranked while two of their three losses have come to ranked foes. Redshirt senior Chance Marsteller is 18-2 on the season at 165 pounds and ranked among the top five nationally. Classmate Thomas Haines is 18-3 at heavyweight and is ranked among the top 15 nationally.

Lock Haven holds a 27-13 advantage in the all-time series between the teams that dates to the late 1970s. However, the teams have split the last four meetings, with the Vikings winning with 18 points in both of their victories. Vaughn posted a win over the Bald Eagles in last season's dual vs. LHU at 157 pounds.

Cleveland State will close the regular season next weekend as it hosts Binghamton.
