Vikings Drop Road Finale to Big Ten Foe

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Cleveland State University wrestling team came up short against a Big Ten foe Sunday afternoon as Michigan State claimed a 36-7 victory inside Jenison Field House.

The Spartans won their fifth consecutive dual while the Vikings were competing on the road for the final time this regular season.

Redshirt senior Armando Torres and true freshman Ben Smith both notched victories for CSU.

Torres provided a dominating effort at 133 pounds, claiming a 10-0 major decision. It was his team-leading 27th win of the season and his 14th of the bonus-point variety.

Smith claimed a 7-2 win via decision at 197 pounds over his Michigan State opponent. Smith now owns 15 wins in a Viking singlet this season, seven of which have come in duals.

Redshirt sophomore Ryan Ford and junior Collin Kelly both dropped their bouts by four points at 165 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively. CSU was also forced to forfeit at the 174-pound weight class.

Cleveland State also had three individuals compete at the JCU Open Sunday at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

Redshirt sophomore Mike Santillo and redshirt freshman Andrew Murphy placed second and fourth at the event at 141 pounds and 165 pounds, respectively.

Santillo defeated a Big Ten foe competing unattached to reach the finals while Murphy tallied three consecutive victories in the consolation bracket to place.
