CLARION, Pa. - Redshirt senior Armando Torres started his Viking career with a bang as his first-place finish at the Clarion Open highlighted CSU's season-opening event Saturday inside the Student Recreation Center.
Torres, an offseason transfer who originally hails from Lorain, Ohio, won all five of his matches to claim first Saturday at 133 pounds. Four of his wins were of the bonus-point variety.
Redshirt sophomore Nico O'Dor also had a strong start to the season, finishing fourth at 157 pounds.
Torres began his final season perfectly, netting a first-period pin after he had built a 12-0 lead. He then needed fewer than four minutes to polish off an opponent from a Big XII school competing unattached as he posted a 18-0 technical fall win. In his quarterfinal match, Torres built a 4-0 lead after the first period and went on to claim a 9-0 major win over an opponent from Lock Haven.
After advancing to the final via a medical forfeit, Torres was truly tested for the first time on the day. He fell behind, 2-0, but an escape cut the margin to one after the first period against his foe from Bloomsburg. Torres then remained on top for the entire second period to build a significant riding time advantage. His escape in the third period tied the match, and he would go on to claim a 3-2 win courtesy of the riding time point he earned.
O'Dor netted four victories on the day, all of which came against Division I opponents. He knocked off an ACC opponent to begin the day with an 8-5 win. He then opened up a 5-1 lead over a Big XII opponent competing unattached and went on to win, 8-4. O'Dor then used a reversal and two near fall points in the first tiebreaking period to earn a 7-4 win over a conference opponent to advance to the semifinals.
After a semifinal loss, O'Dor bounced back nicely. He again won in extra time, netting a takedown in sudden victory over another ACC opponent. He then suffered a tight setback in the third-place match. His two losses came by a combined six points.
Redshirt freshman Brady Barnett, competing at 149 pounds, won five matches in his first time competing in a Viking singlet. Barnett won two matches by pin, including one over a league opponent. He also won via major decision against a Big XII opponent competing unattached.
Redshirt freshman Alex Andrews, redshirt sophomore Cameron Lathem, senior Sam Matzek and redshirt junior Grant Turnmire each won two matches Saturday.
Lathem pinned opponents competing unattached from the Eastern Wrestling League and Mid-American Conference at 125 pounds. He went on to lose in the semifinals by a single point.
Turnmire and Matzek each registered a pin over a Division I opponent competing unattached, each at 149 pounds.
Redshirt freshman Chase Archangelo, redshirt freshman Mason Giordano and redshirt freshman Cody Moosman each won a match over a Division I opponent Saturday. Moosman lost his opening-round match to an opponent from Penn State by a single point.
Cleveland State will open dual action next Sunday, Nov. 11, as part of a quad dual featuring Buffalo, VMI and host Bucknell.
