Vikings Compete in Southern Scuffle to Kick Off the New Year

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State wrestling team will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 1 & Thursday, Jan. 2 as the team will compete in the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The Vikings come into the tournament with a 1-5 record.  CSU wrestled in the Southern Scuffle last year,  with multiple wrestlers picking up wins.  Redshirt senior Ben Willeford led the way for the Vikings at 125 pounds, as he was the lone CSU wrestler advancing into day two. 

On Thursday (Dec. 19) the Vikings dropped a pair of duals to Appalachian State in a close match, 21-13 and to N.C. State 35-3 in Boone, N.C.  CSU had wins from Michael Carlone (141), R.J. LaBeef (149), Latrell Davis (157), Xavier Dye (184), and Riley Shaw (285).  Carlone won by decision picking up his ninth win and tallying his sixth decision of the year, defeating Appalachian State's Jake Smith 5-4.  Davis added another decision victory on the evening, defeating ASU's Nick Hall 6-5.  Dye had an impressive major decision win of a score of 15-6 over Nick Vetell of Appalachian State.  Shaw won a close decision bout over Denzel Dejournette 8-6.  With the win Shaw improved his record to 8-5 on the campaign.  LaBeef had the only win against the Wolfpack of N.C. State, defeating Cohl Fulk in a 10-7 decision.  LaBeef upped his decison total to five on the year.

Last Saturday (Dec. 14) the Vikings competed in the ninth annual CSU Open at Woodling Gym.   The Vikings had 15 wrestlers competing against 25 different schools and over 200 wrestlers.  Xavier Dye and Jared McKinley both had top-five finishes to lead CSU.  

With a major decision win and a forfeit win on Saturday at the CSU Open, 133-pounder McKinley added his 10th and 11th victories on the year tying 125-pound sophomore Daniel King for the team-lead with 11 wins on the season.  McKinley has posted five decisions, four wins by forfeit, and has one victory each by major decision and tech fall.  

Freshman 174 pounder Nick Corba has a 9-5 record on the year.  Corba has two pins, one major decision, and six decision wins for CSU.  Sophomore 141 pounder Michael Carlone is 9-5 on the season, wth six decisions and has won by forfeit, tech fall and major decision.   

The Vikings will be out of action until Friday (Jan. 24), as Cleveland State will host its first EWL match of the year against Edinboro at Woodling Gymnasium.  Wrestling will begin at 7:00 p.m.
