Cleveland State Men’s Tennis Continues Spring Slate By Hosting Butler & Duquesne

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's tennis team will continue the spring slate with a pair of matches on Sunday, January 28, hosting Butler at 11:00 a.m. and Duquesne at 4:00 p.m.

Last Time Out…
The Vikings opened the dual match season by going 1-1 during the opening weekend of play. Cleveland State picked up a 6-1 victory over Binghamton, before dropping a tightly contested 4-3 decision at Penn State.

Vikings At The MMTP
Cleveland State's season opening win against Binghamton marked the first of 11 home matches for the Vikings this season, as they will be calling the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion home once again. All-time, the Vikings are now 55-16 when playing in the MMTP, while they have gone 27-5 at home over the last three+ years.

Battle Named #HLTennis Singles Player Of The Week
After going 2-0 at No. 3 singles in his collegiate dual match debut, freshman Lincoln Battle was named the Horizon League Singles Player of the Week. Battle picked up a pair of straight-set wins as one of just two Vikings to go 2-0 on the weekend.

Mindry & Jamison Named #HLTennis Doubles Team Of The Week
The Vikings made it a sweep on the weekly awards, as Kade Mindry and Nico Jamison picked up #HLTennis Doubles Team of the Week honors. In their first matches playing as a doubles team, Mindry and Jamison went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles, helping the Vikings pick up the doubles point in both matches last weekend.

In The Record Book
Last time out, the Cleveland State doubles team of JuandeDios Abboud and Carl Gedlitschka picked up a 6-3 win to help the Vikings clinch the doubles point against Binghamton, moving into a tie for seventh place on the CSU Doubles Wins List with 24 wins as a tandem. Abboud and Gedlitschka finished last season with a 15-9 record, while they have a team-best 9-2 record so far this year. The duo is just one win shy of moving into sixth place on the list.

Champions In The Classroom
Earlier this week the Cleveland State Athletic Department recognized 300+ student-athletes that posted a 3.0 grade point average or better during the fall semester, with nine Vikings being honored (Abboud, Battle, Chappell, Erler, Gedlitschka, Jamison, Rothchild, Staiger, Zimcosky). In addition, Cole Chappell and Andrew Zimcosky were recognized for being part of the CSU Honors College.

#HLTennis Preseason Poll
Earlier this month the Vikings were selected to finish first in the North Division of the Horizon League Preseason Poll, while also picking up a vote as the overall champion. This marked the 12th year that the Horizon League has released a preseason tennis poll, with Cleveland State being selected as a top-two team 11 out of the 12 years.

Head Coach Brian Etzkin
The Vikings will be under the direction of 22-year head coach Brian Etzkin. As the all-time winningest coach in program history, Etzkin continues the 2024 spring campaign with 311 career wins.
