Cleveland State Men’s Tennis Opens Spring Slate With 6-1 Victory Over Binghamton

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's tennis team opened its 2024 spring slate Friday evening, picking up a 6-1 victory over Binghamton.

"This was a good start to the season for us today, and we are excited to finally get the spring slate underway," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We had a great doubles performance, which is something that we will depend on a lot this year, while Nico and Lincoln both had a great day in their college debuts. Credit to Binghamton for playing hard until the end, and exhibiting very good sportsmanship throughout the entire match."

The Vikings were able to sweep the doubles matches to earn the early 1-0 lead, led by the No. 3 tandem of Lincoln Battle and Devin Boyer who picked up a 6-0 victory. In addition, Kade Mindry and Nico Jamison earned a 6-2 win, while JuandeDios Abboud and Carl Gedlistchka posted a 6-3 victory.

Cleveland State added to its lead with a quick 6-1, 6-3 victory from Battle at the No. 3 spot, while Mikael Erler extended the Viking lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the top of the singles lineup.

Friday's clinching point came from Jamison at No. 5 singles, as he picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory to give the Vikings their first win of the year.

Cleveland State then added to its lead with a 7-5, 6-7(4), 1-0(2) win from Boyer at No. 6 singles, before Gedlitschka put the final point on the board with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (9) win at the No. 4 spot.

Battle and Jamison were both making their collegiate dual match debuts on Friday, with both going 2-0 on the day.

Cleveland State will continue the opening weekend of dual match play on Sunday, January 21, traveling to Penn State for a 1:00 p.m. match.
