Cleveland State Men’s Tennis Drops Regular Season Finale At YSU, 5-2

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team dropped its first Horizon League match of the season Saturday, falling 5-2 at Youngstown State in the regular season finale. The Vikings finish regular season play with a 19-7 overall record and a 7-1 mark against #HLTennis teams.

"We put ourselves in a great position by winning all six first sets today in singles, but we just weren't able to finish the job. It wasn't our best mental day," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Until the season is over, you keep getting to learn and we were given one last chance to look at ourselves in the mirror so we can fix it for next week. We will be ready to go again next weekend for the Horizon League Tournament!"

After dropping the doubles point, the Vikings were able to even the match with the first singles point of the day, as JuandeDios Abboud picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles.

Maxime Mareschal-Hay then gave the Vikings a 2-1 advantage with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory at the top of the lineup. With the win, Mareschal-Hay improved to 24-9 overall this year, and finished with a perfect 8-0 mark against #HLTennis opponents.

Youngstown State responded with a win at No. 2 singles to knot the score at 2-2, before taking a 3-2 lead following a win at the No. 4 spot.

The Penguins were then able to clinch the match with a win at No. 3 singles, before putting the final score at 5-2 YSU with another win at the No. 5 spot.

Despite the loss, Cleveland State will be a No. 1 seed in next week's #HLTennis Tournament, opening play with a semifinal match on Saturday, April 29.
