Cleveland State Men’s Tennis Closes Out Play At Vredevelt Invite

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team closed out play at the Vredevelt Invite Sunday, paced by the duo of JuandeDios Abboud and Alan Matyjas who finished the weekend with a perfect 3-0 doubles record.

"We had another good outing on the doubles courts today, and we are starting to hit our stride when it comes to doubles play and doubles chemistry which is great to see," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We also had another great effort in singles play today, and although there were moments that you could feel the youthfulness of our team, I'm excited about our growth and the direction that we are heading this early on in the season."

After playing two rounds of doubles Sunday, the Cleveland State duo of JuandeDios Abboud and Alan Matyjas picked up a pair of wins to finish the weekend with a perfect 3-0 doubles record. In addition, Devin Boyer and Carl Gedlitschka, Austin Staiger and Cole Chappell, and Kade Mindry and Raul Teichmann all picked up a doubles win on Sunday.

The Vikings also picked up a trio of singles wins on Sunday, including Boyer picking up his first collegiate singles win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over a Chicago State opponent. In addition, Abboud (6-3, 6-3) and Mindry (3-6, 6-2, 1-0(6)) also picked up singles wins.

The Vikings will return to action next weekend at the ITA All-American Championships, with action beginning on Saturday, October 1.
