KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team opened up play at the Vredevelt Invite Saturday, including a pair of doubles wins and a trio of singles wins.
"The team gave maximum effort today, and I could definitely see the potential of this young team," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We had some nervous moments out there from guys playing in their first collegiate matches, but that will sort itself out in time. Our doubles was pretty solid today, and I was pleased with the energy and effort from the team today and I'm looking forward to seeing how we come back tomorrow."
In doubles, Cleveland State picked up two wins on the first day of action, with Kade Mindry and Raul Teichmann earning a 7-6(5) victory over a duo from Butler and JuandeDios Abboud and Alan Matyjas posting a 6-3 win against another Butler tandem.
During the first round of singles play, Raul Teichmann and Abboud both picked up victories over opponents from Chicago State, Teichmann with a 6-4, 6-0 decision and Abboud with a 6-1, 6-2 decision.
In Saturday's second round of singles, freshman Carl Gedlitschka picked up his first collegiate singles win, earning a 6-3, 7-5 victory over an opponent from Navy.
The Vikings will close out play at the Vredevelt Invite tomorrow, with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.
