Cleveland State’s Phillips & Terry Named To #HLTennis All-Academic Team

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Horizon League announced the 2021 Men's Tennis All-Academic Team Wednesday afternoon, with Cleveland State seniors Luke Phillips and Matthew Terry earning a spot on the six-player team.

Phillips and Terry both graduated Magna Cum Laude this spring – Phillips with a degree in Accounting and Terry with a degree in Finance. The duo combined for 14 Cleveland State Dean's List accolades during their careers, while they are both two-time ITA Scholar-Athletes.

On the court, Phillips and Terry helped the Vikings to their third straight Horizon League Tournament title this season, combining for a perfect 18-0 record against league opponents in singles play. Overall, Phillips finished the year with a team-best 17-4 singles record, while Terry went 15-4 on the season.

As the 2021 Horizon League Player of the Year, Terry finished his CSU career ranked third on the CSU Singles Wins List with 92 career victories – one of just four Vikings all-time with 90+ wins.

After picking up All-League Second Team honors this season, Phillips finished his career ranked in the top-10 on both the CSU Singles & Doubles Wins Lists – eighth with 81 singles wins and tied for eighth with 70 doubles wins. Phillips is also tied for third on the CSU Team Doubles Wins List with Nico Mostardi, as the duo finished with 27 career wins and earned a national ranking following the 2021 spring campaign.

During their time at Cleveland State, Phillips and Terry helped the Vikings to 60+ wins, including a 26-1 record against Horizon League opponents. Over the last four years, Phillips, Terry and the Vikings have captured three #HLTennis Tournament titles and have earned a top-10 ITA Regional ranking.
