Men’s Tennis Closes Regular Season With Two-Match Series At IUPUI

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team will close out the 2021 regular season this weekend, traveling to IUPUI for a two-match series on Saturday, April 24 and Sunday, April 25.

Due to the conditions created by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, IUPUI will not allow spectators at any home matches during the 2021 campaign.

Last Time Out…
Cleveland State closed out its home slate with back-to-back wins against Northern Kentucky, improving to 14-4 overall this season and 6-0 in Horizon League play. Once again, the Vikings picked up the doubles point in both matches, while Matthew Terry, Maxime Mareschal-Hay and Luke Phillips all went 2-0 in singles play against the Norse. 

Vikings Extend Winstreak
With the two wins against Northern Kentucky last weekend, the Vikings extended their current win streak to 11 straight matches, marking the longest win streak in program history. The 11 consecutive wins marks the fourth time under head coach Brian Etzkin that the Vikings have notched a double-digit win streak, also doing so during the 2018-19, 2010-11 and 2008-09 campaigns. Entering this weekend's series at IUPUI, the Vikings have won 14 of their last 15 matches, including a perfect 5-0 start to the month of April.

2021 Horizon League Schedule
This year's Horizon League schedule has had a different look to it, as the Vikings are facing the same opponent in back-to-back matches each week. So far this season, Cleveland State has hosted two #HLTennis series at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion, while this weekend's matches at IUPUI will be the second of two road #HLTennis series for the Vikings.

…Vikings In Horizon League Play
After posting their third series sweep of the season against Northern Kentucky last weekend, the Vikings now own an 18-1 record during regular season league play over the last three complete seasons. Under head coach Brian Etzkin, the Vikings are 78-37 all-time in regular season #HLMTEN matches, and have won 16 straight dating back to the 2018-19 campaign.

Terry Named #HLTennis Singles Player Of The Week
Earlier this week senior Matthew Terry picked up his league-leading fifth Singles Player of the Week honor from the Horizon League, earning the accolade after picking up a pair of wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles against Northern Kentucky. Terry, who is 12-4 overall this year stands at 6-0 in league play as one of two Vikings to pick up a singles win in all six #HLTennis matches so far this season.

…Terry & Mareschal-Hay Earn #HLTennis Doubles Team Of The Week Honors
For the third time this season the Vikings made it a sweep of the #HLTennis weekly awards, as Matthew Terry and Maxime Mareschal-Hay were named the Doubles Team of the Week. Terry and Mareschal-Hay picked up a pair of wins at No. 2 doubles against NKU, improving to 8-4 on the season and 4-1 in league play.  

Trio On CSU Singles Wins List
After combining for a 5-0 weekend against Northern Kentucky last time out, the trio of Nico Mostardi, Matthew Terry and Luke Phillips all improved their standing on the CSU Singles Wins List. Entering the IUPUI series, Terry ranks third on the list with 89 career victories, while Mostardi sits fourth with 88 wins and Phillips ranks ninth with 78 victories. Terry is just one win shy of becoming the third Viking all-time to reach the 90-win milestone, while Phillips is just two wins shy of becoming the ninth Viking to record 80+ career wins. 

…Phillips & Mostardi On CSU Doubles Wins List
After picking up a 6-1 win at the top of the doubles lineup on Sunday, Luke Phillips and Nico Mostardi moved into a tie for sixth place on the CSU Team Doubles Wins List with 24 career victories as a tandem. With at least three matches left to play this season, Phillips and Mostardi have a chance to move into third place on the list. Individually, Mostardi ranks sixth with 75 career doubles wins, while Phillips ranks ninth with 67 total doubles wins.

Vikings With The Doubles Point
So far this season Cleveland State has picked up the doubles point in 16 of its 18 matches, including both contests against Northern Kentucky last time out. For the year, Nico Mostardi and Luke Phillips own a team-best 9-3 record, while Matthew Terry and Maxime Mareschal-Hay stand at 8-4 this season.

2021 #HLTennis Tournament
Entering the final weekend of regular season play, Cleveland State has already clinched the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Horizon League tournament, owning a perfect 6-0 record in league play. The Vikings will start their journey for a third straight #HLTennis Tournament title next weekend, with semifinals set for Saturday, May 1 and the championship match slated for Sunday, May 2.
