Men’s Tennis Returns To #HLTennis Play Against Youngstown State

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team will return to Horizon League play this weekend, hosting Youngstown State in a pair of matches on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11.

Due to the conditions created by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Cleveland State will not allow spectators at any home matches during the 2021 campaign.

Last Time Out…
The Vikings took a break from #HLTennis play, earning a 4-3 victory over Case Western. Playing with an adjusted lineup, the Vikings picked up the doubles point and got singles wins from Luke Phillips, Maxime Mareschal-Hay and Clark Bilinovich.

Vikings Extend Winstreak
With the win against Case Western last weekend, the Vikings extended their current win streak to seven straight matches, marking the eighth time under head coach Brian Etzkin that they have posted a win streak of seven matches or more. Entering this weekend's series against Youngstown State, the Vikings have won 10 of their last 11 matches, including a perfect 3-0 mark during the month of February.

2021 #HLMTEN Preseason Poll
Earlier this season, the Vikings were selected as the preseason favorite to win the Horizon League, picked to defend their back-to-back titles in the #HLMTEN Preseason Poll. The Vikings secured all five first-place votes, along with 25 points to beat out second place Youngstown State by six points. IUPUI, Northern Kentucky and UIC rounded out the poll. 

…2021 Horizon League Schedule
This year's Horizon League schedule will have a different look to it, as the Vikings will face the same opponent in back-to-back matches each week. Cleveland State is scheduled to host Youngstown State and Northern Kentucky, while the Vikings are set to travel to IUPUI throughout the rest of the 2021 campaign.  

…Vikings In Horizon League Play
After posting back-to-back wins against UIC to begin Horizon League play last month, the Vikings now own a 14-1 record during regular season league play over the last three complete seasons. Under head coach Brian Etzkin, the Vikings are 74-37 all-time in regular season #HLMTEN matches.

Phillips Moves Up CSU Singles Wins List
Last time out, Luke Phillips notched a 7-6(4), 7-5 win at No. 2 singles against Case Western, moving into sole possession of ninth place on the CSU Singles Wins List with 74 career victories. Phillips is one of three current Vikings to be ranked in the top-10 on the CSU Singles Wins List, joining Nico Mostardi (4th – 86 wins) and Matthew Terry (5th – 85 wins). 

Bilinovich Closing In On 50 Career Singles Wins
Entering the 12th week of the 2021 campaign junior Clark Bilinovich is closing in on 50 career singles wins, currently standing at 45-22 on his CSU career. Bilinovich, who is currently on a team-best four-match win streak, stands at 6-5 this season and needs just five more wins to become the 17th Viking all-time to reach the milestone.

Vikings With The Doubles Point
So far this season Cleveland State has picked up the doubles point in 12 of its 14 matches, including against Case Western last time out. For the year, Nico Mostardi and Luke Phillips own a team-best 7-2 record, while Matthew Terry and Maxime Mareschal-Hay stand at 5-3 this year.

2021 Horizon League Weekly Honors
So far this season the Vikings have picked up three Singles Players of the Week honors and five Doubles Team of the Week accolades from the Horizon League, with the five doubles honors marking a league-high. Matthew Terry has picked up all three of Cleveland State's singles honors, while Nico Mostardi and Luke Phillips have earned three doubles accolades and Matthew Terry/Kade Mindry and Clark Bilinovich/Luke Phillips have earned the other two.
