Vikings Sweep UIC To Close Out First Weekend Of League Play

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team wrapped up its first weekend of Horizon League play Sunday, picking up a 7-0 victory at UIC to improve to 9-4 overall this season and 2-0 in league action.

"This was a good team win for us today, we were once again playing with an adjusted lineup, but we were able to get the job done," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "The team has been selfless over the last few weeks, and people are stepping in to spots in the lineup that they might not usually be in, but in order for us to get healthy by the end of the season the entire team is working together to get the end results that we want. It was good to see Nico back in the singles lineup today, and good to see him pick up a win at No. 1 singles and help lengthen our lineup."

To begin the match, the Vikings picked up the early doubles point, earning wins at the top two spots. At No. 1 doubles Nico Mostardi and Luke Phillips earned a 6-1 win, while Matthew Terry and Maxime Mareschal-Hay picked up a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles.

With their win at the top of the lineup against the Flames, Mostardi and Phillips moved into a tie for ninth place on the CSU Team Doubles Wins List with 22 career victories as a tandem.

The Vikings then went on to win all six singles matches, with Terry clinching the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. With the win, Terry now has 85 career victories and has won eight straight singles matches.

Phillips picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot, improving to a team-best 9-3 this season, while also moving into a tie for ninth place on the CSU Singles Wins List with 73 career wins.

Mostardi returned to the singles lineup for the first time since the beginning of March, posting a 6-2, 7-6(5) win at the top of the lineup. With the win, Mostardi now has 86 career victories, and is just one win shy of moving into third place on the CSU Singles Wins List.

Jack Santilli remained perfect on the season with a win at the No. 6 spot, posting a 6-2, 6-2 victory to improve to 4-0 on the year.

Also picking up singles wins for the Vikings on Sunday were Mareschal-Hay at No. 4 singles (6-2, 2-0, ret.) and JuandeDios Abboud at the No. 5 spot (6-3, 3-6, 1-0(8)).

The Vikings will take a brief break from Horizon League play next weekend, hosting Case Western on Saturday, April 3.
