Men’s Tennis Opens League Play At UIC

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team will open its eight-match Horizon League slate this weekend, traveling to UIC for a pair of matches on Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28.

2021 #HLMTEN Preseason Poll
Earlier this month, the Vikings were selected as the preseason favorite to win the Horizon League, picked to defend their back-to-back titles in the #HLMTEN Preseason Poll. The Vikings secured all five first-place votes, along with 25 points to beat out second place Youngstown State by six points. IUPUI, Northern Kentucky and UIC rounded out the poll.  

…2021 Horizon League Schedule
This year's Horizon League schedule will have a different look to it, as the Vikings will face the same opponent in back-to-back matches each week. Cleveland State is scheduled to host Youngstown State and Northern Kentucky, while the Vikings are set to travel to UIC and IUPUI. 

…Vikings In Horizon League Play
Over the last two seasons the Vikings have combined for a 12-1 record during regular season Horizon League play, including a perfect 6-0 mark during the 2019 campaign. Under head coach Brian Etzkin, the Vikings are 72-37 all-time in regular season #HLMTEN matches.

Vikings Sweep #HLMTEN Weekly Honors
For the second straight week the Vikings swept the Horizon League weekly awards, as Matthew Terry picked up his second straight Singles Player of the Week honor and Nico Mostardi and Luke Phillips were named the Doubles Team of the Week. So far this season, the Vikings have earned two Singles Player of the Week honors, while they have picked up a league-leading four Doubles Team of the Week accolades.

Terry Moves Up CSU Singles Wins List
After posting a pair of wins at No. 1 singles against Xavier last time out, Matthew Terry moved into sole possession of fifth place on the CSU Singles Wins List, entering league play with 83 career wins. Terry, who has won four straight matches, became one of eight Vikings all-time to eclipse the 80-win mark earlier this year, while he is now one of two current Vikings to rank in the top-five (Nico Mostardi).

…Phillips Cracks Top-10 On CSU Singles Wins List
With a 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles against Xavier in the first match last weekend, Luke Phillips cracked the top-10 on the CSU Singles Wins List, ending the weekend tied for 10th with 71 career victories. Phillips, who is the third active Viking to be ranked on the CSU Singles Wins List, owns a 7-3 record so far this season.

Mareschal-Hay Extends Singles Winstreak
Freshman Maxime Mareschal-Hay extended his current winstreak to four straight matches last weekend, picking up a pair of wins at No. 3 singles against Xavier. For the season, Mareschal-Hay owns a team-best 8-3 singles record playing at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. 

Mostardi & Phillips On CSU Doubles Wins List
After going 2-0 at the top of the doubles lineup last weekend Nico Mostardi and Luke Phillips recorded their 20thvictory as a tandem, entering this weekend's matches at UIC with a 20-9 overall record. Last weekend's wins also moved Mostardi into seventh place on the CSU Doubles Wins List with 71 career doubles victories, while Phillips is now tied for 10th with 63 career wins. 

Vikings With The Doubles Point
So far this season Cleveland State has picked up the doubles point in nine of its 11 matches, including both matches against Xavier last time out. For the year, Nico Mostardi and Luke Phillips own a team-best 5-1 record, while Clark Bilinovich and Raul Teichmann stand at 4-1 this season.
