Men’s Tennis Sweeps Weekly Horizon League Awards

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the second straight week the Cleveland State men's tennis team has swept the Horizon League weekly honors, as Matthew Terry picked up his second straight Singles Player of the Week award and Nico Mostardi and Luke Phillips have been named the Doubles Team of the Week.

This trio helped the Vikings to a pair of wins over Xavier last time out, extending Cleveland State's current winstreak to four straight matches and improving the Vikings to 7-4 overall this season.

Terry went 2-0 at the top of the singles lineup against Xavier, earning a 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3 win in the first match of the weekend and followed that up with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the series finale. With the wins, he improved to 6-3 on the season, and has posted a perfect 4-0 record over the last two weekends.

"Once again, Matt stepped into the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup and did a great job of competing," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "He is playing better each week, and I can see him preparing to peak at the right time. Playing the same opponent in back-to-back matches isn't easy, but he was able to pick up two wins against a quality Xavier opponent, helping the team get the overall win in both matches."

For his career, Terry now has 83 career singles wins and is in sole possession of fifth place on the CSU Singles Wins List. After becoming just the eighth Viking all-time to reach 80 career wins last week, Terry is now the second active Viking to be ranked in the top-five on the CSU Singles Wins List, joining Mostardi.

Mostardi and Phillips also went 2-0 against Xavier last weekend, picking up both wins at the No. 1 doubles spot. The duo earned a 6-1 win in the first match of the weekend and followed that up with a 6-2 victory in the second match. On the year, Mostardi and Phillips own a team-best 5-1 doubles record, while they have helped Cleveland State pick up the doubles point in nine of its 11 matches this season.

"Nico and Luke are a very good doubles team, and it was great to see them reunite at the No. 1 spot this weekend after not playing together last week. The co-captains had big energy and were both moving well on the court throughout both matches this weekend. It was nice to see them back together and picking up right where they left off – with a pair of wins," Etzkin said.

For their career, Mostardi and Phillips own a 20-9 record together, just shy of moving onto the CSU Team Doubles Wins List. Individually, Mostardi now ranks seventh on the CSU Doubles Wins List with 71 career doubles wins, while Phillips moved into a tie for 10th with 63 career doubles victories.
