Men’s Tennis Earns 6-1 Victory Over Xavier

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team extended its current winstreak to four straight matches Sunday, earning a 6-1 victory over Xavier to improve to 7-4 overall this season.

"We played another solid match today throughout the doubles and singles lineup," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "The highlight of the match would be Jack stepping into the singles lineup and not only getting a win, but posting the clinching point for us. I'm proud of the way he handled himself today after getting told at the last minute that he was in the lineup, and it was great to see him pick up the win and help us get the match victory."

For the fourth straight match, and the ninth time overall this season, the Vikings picked up the early doubles point after getting quick wins at the top two spots.

At No. 1 doubles, Luke Phillips and Nico Mostardi posted a 6-2 victory, while Matthew Terry and Maxime Mareschal-Hay earned a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Phillips and Mostardi now own a team-best 5-1 record this season, while Terry and Mareschal-Hay picked up their third win as a doubles team.

To begin singles play, Mareschal-Hay was able to put the first point on the board, as he earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Matthew Graft to give the Vikings a 2-0 advantage. For the season, Mareschal-Hay now owns a team-best 8-3 singles record.

The Vikings were then able to gain a 3-0 edge with a win at the top of the lineup, as Terry posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Brett Winters. With the win, Terry is now in sole possession of fifth place on the CSU Singles Wins List with 83 career victories.

Cleveland State's clinching point came at the No. 6 spot then, as Jack Santilli stepped into the singles lineup and earned a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Aaron Thompson to help the Vikings extend their winstreak to four matches. Santilli has played in just two singles matches this season, picking up wins in both appearances.

The Vikings were also able to pick up points at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, as Clark Bilinovich earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory and JuandeDios Abboud posted a 6-2, 7-6(4) win.

Next up for Cleveland State will be Horizon League play, as the Vikings are set to begin their eight-match league slate at UIC next Saturday (March 27) and Sunday (March 28).
