Vikings Open March With Match At Western Michigan

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team will look to extend its three-match winstreak this weekend, as the Vikings will open the month of March with a match at Western Michigan on Friday, March 5.

Last Time Out…
The Vikings finished the month of February with a perfect 3-0 record after picking up a 6-1 victory at Toledo. In addition to the doubles point, the Vikings also got singles wins from Matthew Terry, Luke Phillips, Maxime Mareschal-Hay, Clark Bilinovich, and Raul Teichmann.

Mindry & Terry Named #HLMTEN Doubles Team of the Week
Earlier this week, the Cleveland State duo of Kade Mindry and Matthew Terry was named the Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week after picking up a 7-6(5) victory at No. 2 doubles against Toledo. So far this season, Mindry and Terry own a perfect 2-0 record, while the tandem stands at 10-2 all-time.

So far this season, the Vikings have picked up three Horizon League weekly accolades, as Luke Phillips and Nico Mostardi have been named the Doubles Team of the Week twice (Feb. 3, Feb. 24), while Kade Mindry and Matthew Terry picked up their first #HLMTEN honor earlier this week. 

Vikings With The Doubles Point
So far this season Cleveland State has picked up the doubles point in five of its six matches, including at Toledo last time out. Against the Rockets, the Vikings were able to pick up a 7-6(5) win at No. 2 doubles from Kade Mindry and Matthew Terry, and a 7-6(1) win at the No. 3 spot from Luke Phillips and Maxime Mareschal-Hay who were playing as a tandem for the first time.

Phillips Notches Fifth Straight Win
Luke Phillips extended his singles winstreak last time out, picking up his fifth straight win in a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 decision at No. 2 singles against Toledo. Phillips now owns a team-best 5-1 record this season, while he owns 69 career singles wins. Entering Friday's match at Western Michigan, Phillips is just two wins shy of earning a spot on the CSU Singles Wins List.

Terry Closing In On 80 Career Singles Wins
Entering Friday's match at Western Michigan Matthew Terry currently has 79 career singles wins, needing just one more win to become the eighth Viking all-time to reach the 80-win milestone. Last time out, Terry picked up a 7-6(2), 6-4 win at the top of the lineup against Toledo, notching his second straight win. Terry currently ranks eighth on the CSU Singles Wins List, while one more win would move him into a tie for seventh place.

Mostardi & Santilli Return For Super-Senior Seasons
After being granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA after having the 2019-20 season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the senior duo of Nico Mostardi and Jack Santilli have decided to return for a 'super-senior' season. Throughout their Cleveland State careers, this duo has led the Vikings to 52 dual match victories and two Horizon League Tournament titles.

Vikings Post Strong Semester In The Classroom
With the 2020 Fall Semester in the books, the Vikings posted one of their best semesters in program history, finishing with a 3.779 Team GPA for the term. In addition, four Vikings earned a spot on the Cleveland State University Dean's List (JuandeDios Abboud, Luke Phillips, Jack Santilli, Austin Staiger), while Matthew Terry and Maxime Mareschal-Hay were named to the Cleveland State University President's List. 

Mostardi Earns Oracle ITA Preseason Ranking
For the third straight year, Nico Mostardi is featured in the Oracle ITA National Singles Rankings, as he came in at No. 91 in this year's preseason rankings. Last year, Mostardi spent the entire shortened campaign ranked in the top-100, and finished the year ranked No. 93. Mostardi's highest career ranking came after the 2019 fall season when he was ranked No. 65.

Head Coach Brian Etzkin
Brian Etzkin is in his 19th year at the helm of the Vikings, owning a 261-188 dual match record. During his tenure, Etzkin has led the Vikings to seven Horizon League Tournament titles and seven trips in the NCAA Tournament.
