Vikings Look To Extend Winstreak At Toledo

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team will close out the month of February on the road this weekend, traveling to Toledo for a 1:00 p.m. match on Friday, February 26.

Last Time Out…
The Vikings picked up a 5-2 victory at Buffalo, improving to 2-0 during the month of February. In addition to the doubles point, the Vikings also got singles wins at the top four spots from Matthew Terry, Luke Phillips, Maxime Mareschal-Hay, and Clark Bilinovich.  

Phillips & Mostardi Pick Up Second Weekly #HLMTEN Honor
Cleveland State's top doubles team of Luke Phillips and Nico Mostardi earned their second weekly accolade from the Horizon League earlier this week, as they were named the #HLMTEN Doubles Team of the Week. Phillips and Mostardi posted a 6-2 victory at the top of the lineup against Buffalo last time out, helping the Vikings capture the doubles point for the fourth straight match. With the win, the duo remained perfect on the season, as they are 3-0 entering Friday's match at Toledo.

Phillips Extends Singles Winstreak…Again
Luke Phillips picked up his fourth straight singles win last time out, posting a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Buffalo. Phillips, who was once again playing at the No. 2 spot, improved to 4-1 on the year, while he also notched his 68th career singles win. Entering Friday's match at Toledo, Phillips is just three wins shy of earning a spot on the CSU Singles Wins List.

Terry Earns First Win Of 2020-21 Campaign
Last time out, Matthew Terry picked up his first singles win of the season, earning a 7-6(7), 6-2 victory at the top of the lineup against Buffalo. Terry, who missed two matches earlier this season, picked up his 78th career victory with the win against the Bulls, as he is now just two wins shy of becoming the eighth Viking all-time with 80 career singles wins. Entering Friday's match against the Rockets, Terry ranks eighth on the CSU Singles Wins List.

Vikings With The Doubles Point
So far this season Cleveland State has picked up the doubles point in four of its five matches, including at Buffalo last time out. Against the Bulls, the Vikings were able to pick up a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles and a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, with Clark Bilinovich and Raul Teichmann picking up their team-leading fourth win at the No. 2 spot. 

Mostardi & Santilli Return For Super-Senior Seasons
After being granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA after having the 2019-20 season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the senior duo of Nico Mostardi and Jack Santilli have decided to return for a 'super-senior' season. Throughout their Cleveland State careers, this duo has led the Vikings to 52 dual match victories and two Horizon League Tournament titles.

Vikings Post Strong Semester In The Classroom
With the 2020 Fall Semester in the books, the Vikings posted one of their best semesters in program history, finishing with a 3.779 Team GPA for the term. In addition, four Vikings earned a spot on the Cleveland State University Dean's List (JuandeDios Abboud, Luke Phillips, Jack Sasntilli, Austin Staiger), while Matthew Terry and Maxime Mareschal-Hay were named to the Cleveland State University President's List.

Mostardi Earns Oracle ITA Preseason Ranking
For the third straight year, Nico Mostardi is featured in the Oracle ITA National Singles Rankings, as he came in at No. 91 in this year's preseason rankings. Last year, Mostardi spent the entire shortened campaign ranked in the top-100, and finished the year ranked No. 93. Mostardi's highest career ranking came after the 2019 fall season when he was ranked No. 65. 

Head Coach Brian Etzkin
Brian Etzkin is in his 19th year at the helm of the Vikings, owning a 260-188 dual match record. During his tenure, Etzkin has led the Vikings to seven Horizon League Tournament titles and seven trips in the NCAA Tournament.
