No. 13 Michigan State Slips Past Cleveland State, 1-0

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Cleveland State University men's soccer team limited offensive opportunities for No. 13 Michigan State, but the host Spartans were able to make a first half lead stand up in a 1-0 victory at a clear DeMartin Stadium Monday afternoon.

The Spartans, who have four shutouts en route to their 4-0 start, scored in the 20th minute to tally the game's lone goal.

Sophomore Sebastian Kalk made a pair of top-notch saves in the early going to keep the game scoreless, notching stops in the 13th and 16th minutes. However, Michigan State got on the board soon thereafter with a shot off a corner kick.

The game settled down for a spell as neither team got a shot over the next 15 minutes. The Spartans took three shots over the final 10 minutes of the opening frame but did not connect.

Cleveland State had a solid final 45 minutes but was unable to find an equalizer. The Vikings held Michigan State to just two second-half shots while taking six of their own.

Redshirt junior Brent Nanchoff, junior Gianluca DiFranco and sophomore Thomas Bielanski each took attempts in the second half that required saves from the MSU goalkeeper.

DiFranco, who returned to the starting lineup after coming off the bench last time out, tied for the match high with three shots.

Redshirt junior Madifing Conde, a transfer, and true freshman Zack Kluever both earned his first start as a Viking Monday afternoon, with Conde patrolling central defense and Kluever in an attacking midfield role.

CSU continues its five match road trip this coming Saturday, Sept. 9, as it opens Horizon League play by facing League newcomer IUPUI.
