CLEVELAND - The Cleveland State men's and women's teams combined to win all but one of the events they competed in on the day in downing Valparaiso at Busbey Natatorium on Saturday (Jan. 29), with the men claiming a 142-78 victory and the women scoring a 127-96 triumph. Senior men's diver Thatcher Carr continued to impress on the one meter boards, topping the school record for the third time this season and the second time in less than 24 hours.

After topping the school record yesterday with a 358.65 against Notre Dame and Canisius, Carr improved on his CSU-best mark with a 369.50. He also placed first in the three-meter boards with a 302.05 and helped the 200 freestyle relay team to a win, swimming the second leg in 22.32.

"We tried a lot of new dives today in the three-meter," head diving coach Rich Karban said. "It was a little bit of a let down, but he did some of the hardest dives that he has ever done. In time, he'll be turning in some amazing dives."

Senior Samantha Jones, junior Kirsty McKechnie, sophomore Marianne Lionell and freshman Deanna Raedel were all two-event winners for the Viking women's team, as CSU was victorious in all of the swimming events on the day.

Jones swam to a first-place time of 10:55.29 in the 1,000 free and added a top mark of 5:16.07 in the 500 free. McKechnie scored wins in both the 400 IM (4:39.97) and the 200 fly (2:12.01), while Lionell swam to wins in the 200 free (1:56.36) and the 200 breast (2:24.21). Raedel added top times in the 50 free (25.14) and the 100 free (55.07).

"Everyone swam really well today," assistant women's coach Jamie Moore said. "We had a lot of people swimming out of their usual events, but they all stepped up to the challenge and came out on top. A lot of good times today."

Junior Wendy Peel added a win of her own, swimming to a 2:11.98 in the 200 back. The 200 medley relay team of Peel, Lionell, Marlene Przykling and Raedel scored a top time of 1:51.86, while the Jones, Przkling, McKechnie and Angie Malloy swam to a 200 free relay time of 1:42.82.

The men's squad won all but one event in the meet. Sophomore Bjorn Schantz was a two-event winner for the Vikings, winning both the 400 IM (4:09.62) and the 200 fly (1:56.99). Three freshmen posted wins for CSU as well, including Johan Norling in the 100 free (47.50), Brady Lusk in the 500 free (4:51.40) and Dave Duecker in the 200 breast (2:09.26). Cleveland State also benefited from wins in the 1,000 free by Daniel Thomasson (9:42.77), the 200 free by Adam Wroblewski (1:47.64) and the 50 free by Ryan Klaus (21.54).

"We moved a lot of people around today to try and work on some things," head coach Wally Morton said. "This was an enjoyable meet. We had some really excellent swims. I'm very excited about Wright State next weekend. It's going to be a good test for us."

The 200 medley relay team of Pieter Pelser, Duecker, Norling and Wroblewski added a win in 1:36.08. David Peterson out-touched Todd Hostutler by .02 seconds in the 200 back for Valparaiso's only win on the day.

Cleveland State concludes the regular season next weekend when they host Wright State on Friday (Feb. 4) at 4:00 p.m. and UIC on Saturday (Feb. 5) for Senior Day beginning at 2:00 p.m.
