BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Three Cleveland State cross country runners recorded personal best times as the Vikings placed 14th at the Mel Brodt Invitational hosted by Bowling Green on Saturday morning.
"I am extremely pleased with how we ran today," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "To have three athletes run personal bests is quite an accomplishment. We had great weather and overall it was just a nice day to run.
"We worked really hard this week and the team responded and ran hard today," he continued. "The girls are very happy and are appreciative of the hard work that they have all been putting in."
Running in front of a crowd that featured several former CSU student-athletes, Viking freshman Allison Craine was CSU's top finisher for the third straight week as she shattered her old personal best by more than a minute. Her time of 19:02 placed her 33rd overall and bettered her old personal best of 20:16 set at the Bill Sudeck Invitational on Sept. 1.
Sophomore Julie Piotrowski was the second finisher for CSU and 74th overall with a personal best time of 19:43, just the second time she has finished a race in under 20 minutes. She ran a 19:59 at the Mel Brodt Invitational as a freshman.
Sophomore Colleen Conway was the final Viking runner to register a personal best time of 20:04, good enough for 96th place. Conway's time was almost one minute better than her old best time of 20:59. Sophomore Ali Ohliger, who was running in her first race this season, finished 133rd overall with a time of 21:27, while freshman Jordan Hoile was CSU's fifth scorer as she was just two seconds behind Ohliger and placed 134th. It was Hoile's top time of the season.
The five CSU scorers averaged 20:21, a best under Jaketic, while the five scoring times were all under 21:30, another best under Jaketic.
Juniors Audrey Piotrowski (148th in 22:10), Melisa Mazanzc (161st in 23:27) and Amy Salzman (164th in 24:28) all ran season-best times to round out the Viking runners.
CSU will return to action next Saturday when it competes at the Ohio University Invitational in Athens, Ohio.
