WOOSTER, Ohio - The Cleveland State cross country team began the 2023 campaign Friday evening, taking part in the Wooster Invitational 4K.
Freshman Mia Beemsterboer led the Vikings during the opening race, winning the event in a time of 16:13.1.
"We had a great start to our season today, and put forth a great team effort," head coach Jason Hudson said. "We were led by a trio of freshmen, putting eight finishers in the top-10. Our goal was to run in a pack and we accomplished that pretty well today. Mia ran a great race, she was very patient and ran the second part of the race very well. I'm very optimistic for what is to come this season."
Following Beemsterboer the Vikings notched six straight finishers in third through eighth place, giving Cleveland State seven of the top eight places.
The freshman duo of Natalie Keller (3rd - 16:38) and Brooke Bechtel (4th - 16:45) were the next Vikings to finish, while sophomore Ana Crangle rounded out the top-five finishers with a time of 16:59.
Kiannah Sarver (6th - 17:16), Sage Colòn (7th - 17:23), Ariana Coats (8th - 17:27), and Sophia Pomnean (10th - 17:40) rounded out the top-10 placers for Cleveland State.
The Vikings had another pair of top-15 finishers in Madelynn Madison (11th - 17:43) and Madeline Crissman (14th - 18:26), while Savannah Shaver placed 18th overall (19:46).
Next up for the Vikings will be the All-Ohio Meet on Friday, September 15.
