MADISON, Wis. – The Cleveland State cross country team wrapped up its 2014 season Friday afternoon, competing in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The Vikings were paced by Ashlyn Woods, who finished with a 6K time of 23:09.
"This wasn't our best performance today, but I thought we did very good despite the cold weather and rough travel conditions," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "It is very hard to run a strong race when the weather is so cold and wintery, but everyone persevered and got the job done. Even though everyone wishes they could have done better, there were multiple people who improved on their times from last season at the same course."
Woods, who paced the Vikings for the seventh straight race, placed 161st overall and record the fifth fastest 6K time under Jaketic with her final time of 23:09. At the 5K mark, Woods recorded a time of 19:29 – which is also in the top-50 times over the past 10 seasons.
Marissa Ward, Katie Webb, and Samantha Butterbaugh also recorded top-200 times for the Vikings, led by Ward who finished 190th overall with a time of 23:55. Webb placed 197th overall in 24:17 and Butterbaugh crossed the finish line with a time of 24:18 in 198th place. All three also recorded top-50 6K times under Jaketic.
Also competing for the Vikings were Alanna Shamrock (25:05), Erin Pavick (27:35), and Megan O'Keefe (28:19).
"Overall, this team did a tremendous job this season race-in and race-out. Everyone put 100% effort in every practice and every meet, and that is something that I am very proud of. I am very grateful for all that Katie has given to the program over her four years with us, and I am very excited to see what everyone else has in store for next season," Jaketic said.
Throughout the course of the 2014 season, the Vikings recorded 13 top-50 CSU 5K times and 12 top-50 CSU 6K times. Included in those top-50 times were 5K and 6K CSU records from Ashlyn Woods – 5K: 18:35 and 6K:22:17.
