BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Ashlyn Woods became just the second Viking to break the 19-minute 5K mark over the past 10 seasons, leading the Cleveland State cross country team to a fourth place finish at the BGSU Mel Brodt Invitational. Along with Woods, three additional runners posted sub 20-minute times.
"Everyone had an awesome race today, four runners were able to break 20-minutes, including Ashlyn and Katie who recorded lifetime-best marks," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "Everyone from top to bottom in the lineup had a great performance, and they can finally see all of their hard work that they put in during practice paying off. It was a nice day to run, and the course was a bit soft, but everyone adjusted and ran extremely well."
Woods, who finished 22nd overall with a time of 18:58, joins CSU standout and current volunteer assistant coach Allison Lowe (Craine) as the only Vikings to break the 19-minute mark since the 2005 season. Woods' time from the BGSU Invitational ranks third all-time on the CSU top-performances list.
Katie Webb, who also posted a career-best Friday evening, finished 29th overall with a time of 19:20. Webb's time ranks 21st all-time on the top-performances list, and marks the second time this season that she has posted a sub 20-minute 5K.
Samantha Butterbaugh and Alanna Shamrock also recorded sub 20-minute 5Ks, Butterbaugh with a time of 19:45 and Shamrock with a personal-best time of 19:51.
The next Vikings to cross the finish line were Madison Scagnetti (20:21) and Amelia Holt (20:52), while Megan O'Keefe, Erin Pavick, and Sierra Swigert all notched 21-minute 5Ks. Sarah Mallow, Emily Marshall, Kristin McCarthy, and Ashley Lydic also competed for the Vikings Friday evening.
The Vikings will look to continue improving next week, participating in the Friendship Invitational on Saturday, September 20.
