DAYTON, Ohio - The Cleveland State cross country team opened the 2012 season Saturday, running in the Flyer 5K Challenge. As a team, the Vikings finished sixth while Ohio State led the group with a first place finish.

"I thought we ran really well for it being the first race of the season today and it definitely gave us some things that we need to work on moving forward," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "We had some personal bests today which was great to see and we were really close to Wright State, which is always a good measure for us to see how we run against Horizon League opponents."

Frsehman Ashley Lydic paced the Vikings in her first collegiate meet, finishing 52nd in a time of 21:04. Katie Webb was the second CSU runner to cross the finish line, placing 54th in a time of 21:14, just two places behind Lydic. Maddie Korak was the third Viking to record a top-60 finish, placing 60th in a time of 21:31.

"I was really pleased with Ashley's run today, it is tough to be a freshman in your first collegiate race and run as well as she did. Maddie also had a great first race for us today, running along with Katie to pace our group," Jaketic said.

The trio of Rachel NiemiAshley Berlin and Angela Kirila all recorded personal best times compared to last season, led by Kirila who crossed the finish line in 22:33. Niemi crossed the finish line in 23:15 and Berlin crossed the finish line in 24:31.

Megan O'Keefe and Amanda Kalain also ran for the Vikings, crossing the line in 23:27 and 24:56 respectively.

"Everyone ran really hard today, the humidity was terrible and it gave us some problems throughout the race but everyone pushed through. This first race was definitely a learning experience for us and I am looking forward to what we can do throughout the season," Jaketic said.

The Vikings will be in action again next weekend at the Titan Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8. The women's race is slated for an 11:15 a.m. start.
