CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State cross country team will open the 2012 season this weekend, participating in the Flyer 5K Challenge which is hosted by the University of Dayton. The women's intercollegiate 5,000 meter race is scheduled for an 11:15 a.m. start at Indian Riffle Park in Kettering, Ohio.
The Vikings will be one of nine teams competing in the Flyer 5K Challenge, joined by Cedarville, Cincinnati, Miami (OH), Ohio State, Urbana, Wittenberg, Wright State and the host Flyers.
Cleveland State will have a new look this season, as they have just five returners including co-captains, senior Rachel Niemi and sophomore Katie Webb. Niemi and Webb will be joined by juniorAshley Berlin and sophomores Tori Holt and Angela Kirila as the veterans of the squad.
All five returners competed in the 2011 Horizon League Championship, leading the Vikings to a fourth place finish, which marked their best finish in program history. Out of the returning five, Holt recorded the top 5K and 6K times last season, posting a 20:12 5K time at the All-Ohio Championship and a 24:38 6K time at the Ohio Invitational.
This veteran group will be joined by four newcomers; Amanda Kalain (So. - Seville, Ohio), Maddie Korak (Fr. - Bowling Green, Ohio), Ashley Lydic (Fr. - Columbiana, Ohio) and Megan O'Keefe (Fr. - Rocky River, Ohio).
