CLEVELAND, Ohio - Behind 21 kills from senior outside hitter Molly Hoying (St. Henry, OH/St. Henry), the Cleveland State University volleyball squad downed Valparaiso University 15-13. 15-7, 8-15, 15-11 at the Butler Invitational to finish the tournament 2-1.
Hoying equalled her career high, previously taken at Wright State on Oct. 9, 1999 while also contributing with 18 digs. In addition, senior middle hitter Michele Smith (Fremont, OH/Ross) tagged 16 kills to go along with 12 digs while sophomore outside hitters Michelle Iafigliola (Mentor, OH/Mentor) and Lori Betchker (Amherst, OH/Steele) recorded 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Iafigliola also accounted for 18 digs.
In the morning's opening action, Cleveland State fell to DePaul University 15-1, 15-7, 15-0 despite a match-high 15 kills from Molly Hoying.
The Blue Demons hit a sizzling .450 (51K-6E-100TA) for the match compared to the Vikings .206 (39K-17E-107TA).
The Vikings return to action Tuesday, Sept. 5 when they travel to the University of Akron for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the Zips at the JAR Arena.
