YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Led by senior Michelle Iafigliola's double-double of 21 kills and 12 digs, Cleveland State outlasted Youngstown State in a five-game thriller, 30-20, 22-30, 26-30, 30-24, 13-15, Friday night at Beeghly Center.
The match was the Horizon League opener for both teams. With the victory, CSU (12-3, 1-0 Horizon League) extended its winning streak to 10 straight matches. The Vikings are off to their best start since the 1983 squad opened 14-3.
Three other Vikes also reached double digit kill totals as sophomore Jamie Bouyer (Bedford Heights, Ohio/Chanel) nailed 16 kills with a .325 hitting percentage, freshman Alisa Hatcher (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) tallied 12 kills and sophomore setter Kelly Crain (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) tagged 11 kills while hitting .526.
In addition, Hatcher added 15 digs and five aces while Crain tallied 50 assists.
The Penguins (7-9, 0-1) were paced by junior Annie Buschur and Colleen Royer with 17 kills apiece. YSU freshman Nickole Kennedy also ripped 16 kills while classmate Angie Pasquinelli added a double-double with 51 assists and 17 digs.
The Vikings continue their play on the road next weekend when they visit UW-Green Bay, Friday, Oct. 4, at 8 p.m.
