Cleveland State Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match At Green Bay In Regular Season Finale

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Cleveland State volleyball team closed out regular season play Saturday, dropping a five-set match at Green Bay. The Vikings now stand at 16-13 overall this season, and posted a 10-8 record in #HLVB play.

Three Vikings finished with double-digit kills on Saturday, Nia Hall with 18, Laken Voss with 17 and Madalynn Butler with 11.

Karly Klaer notched her 19th double-double of the season with 45 assists and 18 digs on the match.

The Viking defense was led by Emma Walker with 23 digs, while Lesley Marshall added 14.

Cleveland State recorded five service aces on the match, including two from JeriLynn Koehler.

Despite dropping the first set, the Vikings answered with a 25-23 win in set two to even the match at 1-1.

During the second frame, the Vikings were able to work their way back into the contest at the midway point, gaining an 18-17 lead on a Madalynn Butler kill, before extending their lead a few points later at the 21-18 mark on a Phoenix error. The Vikings controlled play for the remainder of the frame then, closing out the set with another Green Bay error.

Cleveland State then carried its momentum into the third set, as the Vikings gained a 16-13 lead midway through the frame, before a Nia Hall kill and Phoenix error extended the lead to 20-15. The Vikings then gained set point on an Emma Walker service ace, before closing out the 25-19 third set win with a Laken Voss kill.

Green Bay responded with a win in the fourth frame, forcing a fifth and deciding set.

The Phoenix were able to get out to an early lead in the fifth set, and then held off a late Viking run to capture the 15-13 fifth set victory to clinch the 3-2 match win.

Cleveland State will now await its opponent in the upcoming 2023 Horizon League Tournament, which will begin with first round matches on Friday, November 17.
