Cleveland State Volleyball Notches 3-1 Victory At Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Cleveland State volleyball team opened its final weekend of regular season play Friday evening, picking up a 3-1 victory at Milwaukee. With the win, the Vikings improved to 16-12 overall and 10-7 in Horizon League play.

Liberty Torres tallied a team-high 22 kills at Milwaukee, while JeriLynn Koehler and Madalynn Butler both added 12 kills.

Karly Klaer recorded 47 assists on the night, eclipsing the 1,800-assist mark for her career.

Emma Walker led the Viking defense with 30 digs, marking her fifth 30-dig effort of the season.

As a team, the Vikings combined for seven service aces, including three from Walker and two from Butler.

Cleveland State recorded 13.0 total blocks on the night, with a team-best seven from Koehler.

After playing from behind for the majority of the first set, the Vikings were able to go on an 8-1 run late in the frame, gaining a 24-23 advantage on a Madalynn Butler kill. Despite Milwaukee knotting the score at 24-24 with the next point, a JeriLynn Koehler kill regained set-point for the Vikings at 25-24, before a Panther error gave Cleveland State the 26-24 first set victory.

Milwaukee responded with a 26-24 win during the second set, but the Vikings answered with a 25-21 victory in the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

After trading points throughout the majority of the frame, the Vikings were finally able to gain a 23-20 lead following a mini 3-0 run on a pair of Koehler kills and a Butler and Koehler block. Cleveland State then earned set point on a Liberty Torres kill, before a service ace from Torres closed out the 25-21 third set victory.

Cleveland State was able to carry its momentum into the fourth set then, as the Vikings gained a 16-13 advantage midway through the frame on a Nia Hall kill. The Vikings were able to hold off a Milwaukee run over the next few points, regaining a sizable lead at 23-19 on a Torres kill.

Cleveland State picked up match-point on a Koehler block, before another Torres kill closed out the 25-20 fourth set victory.

Cleveland State will close out the regular season tomorrow, traveling to Green Bay for a 5:00 p.m. EST contest.
